Firefox woes

Hrm.

For a few days, at least, I’ve been having problems with buttons/links that should be opening up a popup window (or at least a new tab) not doing so.

I suspected it might be Tab Mix, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. At least, I tried tweaking the settings to no avail, then I disabled it and restarted and the problem continued.

The most recent extension download I have is AdBlock. I may try disabling that and seeing if it stops being a problem.

Related (probably) problem — the FF process never closes completely, requiring me to manually shut it down in Task Manager.

Swell.

Okay, so uninstalling AdBlock temporarily frelled my FF install. I had to finally start up in Safe mode, exit, then start up again. All’s right with the world.

Except it didn’t solve the link problem.

So, as an example, if I go to Scott’s blog and click on a Talk To Me link, nothing happens. That is, it looks busy for a few moments, then quits.

If I right-click and say to Open in New Tab, it does so just fine.

It’s a CGI script that should be opening a new comment window (which is so 2002, Scott, really).

Next step is to try uninstalling Tab Mix.

This wouldn’t be a humongous problem, except the same thing happens on popups like this that are called from non-right-clickable buttons.

Hrm. My profile may be what’s frelled up, dagnabbit. Still having the won’t-exit-fully problem. Tried deleting another recent extension, and things went even wonkier.

I’d rather not rebuild my profile, but …

Try uninstalling a few more things …

Yeah. Not all extensions are loading properly, and I’m still getting the process-never-closes-right-so-profile-can’t-be-opened problem, as well as the sometimes-needing-to-open-in-safe-mode-first problem. Rats.

Count yourself (relatively) lucky, you could have my problem instead… powering along, working with about ten or so tabs open, then WHAM. “Firefox has encountered a problem and has to close now. Go on, cry to your momma.”

V. Vexing. No clue as to why, either.

FF has been known to abend on me on occasion, but rarely (and no more frequently than the average Windows ap). Fortunately, at least a couple of plug-ins out there that will bring back your session with the tabs re-opened.

Okay, did an export of bookmarks from the old profile, made a list of the extensions used, and created a new profile (”firefox.exe -profilemanager”).

So far, the window opening and process closure are working — and stuff is recognizing the TypeKey login, too, which wasn’t happening before.

Not sure what happened (and irksome), but it’s resolved (so far) now.

So far so good. Slowly reinstalling extensions. Discovered the “Resize Search Bar” extension, which beats hand-editing UserChrome to change the size of the search box.
