Someone’s list of ten character actors who should be in every film [1].

So I’m looking at this, appalled that I don’t recognize a single name …

… except …

Hmmm … Gary Cole [2]?

Then I realize where I saw him before — going through my Crusade [3] collection [4], where Cole played Captain Matthew Gideon [5].

And then, checking out the IMDB listing for him … good Lord, he’s been in a ton of stuff, from Office Space to American Gothic (Sheriff Lucas Buck) to Kim Possible (Dr. Possible) to The West Wing (VP Bob Russell).

Huh.

Who the heck made that list? Where’s Steve Buscemi? Chris Cooper? Ian Holm? Ruth Gordon? Or is this only a list of current character actors?

I have a worthy goal today, then. Come up with the 10 best character actors of all time! Oh, yeah, and…um, I guess I should fit going to work in there somewhere…

Or J.K. Simmons? J.T. Walsh? (ok, I realize he’s dead) Tom Skerritt? Is there anyone over 35 in that list?

Yeah, that was kind of my impression.

Though Gary Cole is, in fact, between my brother’s age and myself. 🙂

Of course, my list of character actors would be a lot of guys who appeared on the (original) Twilight Zone. So beware. 🙂

Yes, the list is much shorter if we can’t include guys like Burgess Meredith. I’d havetrouble coming up with a decent-sized list that included only living actors, but I’d definitely want another Jeffrey in there: [8].
