Zeroing in on a new computer

So after a day of shopping, I think in my new notebook quest I’m looking at the ASUS G71GX (picture not shown at left) — Intel Dual-Core 2.5GHz processor, 6 Gb RAM, 500Gb Hard Drive, 17.1″ screen, with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX-260M graphics card with 1Gb dedicated RAM. It’s going for about $1200. (Vendor, Best Buy, CNET)

The reviews have been pretty positive except for (a) things I don’t explictly care about and (b) an early BIOS bug that caused problems when the video processor got hot. This last item has skewed the ratings for the machines; factoring those out since the issue was fixed it’s got very good user scores.

So my question is this: anyone out there in DDtBland have experience with ASUS that might sway my decision one way or the other on this? Or anyone with more gaming computer savvy have any misgivings about the above “rig” (as all the cool kids call it)?

  1. Most of the custom built machines I do are with Asus boards, I’ve always liked the quality and features of their boards, and the Nvidia 260 is a very respectable graphics chipset. Looks like a solid choice, sirrah.

  2. I’ve heard a lot of folks say the same things about custom-builts using ASUS boards, so that’s a positive. NVIDIA says that the GTX-260M is one of their top notebook GPUs, so hopefully that’s a good sign, too.
