Good food, good times

De threw a “Julie/Julia” party yesterday, inviting various and sundry friends. We ended up spending 12 hours down there, having a great time.

Each  person was to bring the fixings for one (or more) dish.  There was a bit of confusion as to whether this had to be from Mastering the Art of French Cooking or some other book, or just something one had always wanted to try or be challenged by, or what (at least I was confused). In the end, Margie cooked steaks with a marrow sauce (nummy), and backed cucumbers (which were much nicer than they sound).  I made crème brûlée (which was a bit lumpy, and missing the sugar in the main custard because I forgot it, but which gave me a chance to play with FIRE).

We also brought down a couple of bottles of chateauneuf-du-pape, to lend authenticity.  Other folks brought beer, which lent jollity.

After dinner (which meant around 10 p.m., I guess), we started watching the movie Julie/Julia, which was an enjoyable movie, if a bit unfocused.

It was nice meeting some of De’s coworkers, and having a chance to spend some time with Lee and De.

The weather more or less cooperated. The drive down was just fine. Driving back up was a bit more dicey, even (or especially) at 1:30 a.m.  We made it okay, esp. after we stopped to  refill the wiper reservoir.

Crawled into bed after 2.  Slept contented.

  1. Only two things I think I’d have changed, more snacky-foods whilst the cooking was occurring (I was getting pretty hungry by the time the dinner bell rang) and starting the movie earlier so youse guys that had the longest drive weren’t leaving so late. All in all though, yes a very good time with good food and friends. Thanks again to all who came. 🙂

  2. Hmmm. Snacks and nibbles earlier (beyond the home-made mozzarella) would have been a good idea (mebbe home-made nibbles). Though the beer was nice and filling.

I was expecting the movie to start earlier (maybe when dinner finally came out), and had given up on seeing it when it finally got put in to play. The hour really wasn’t as much of an issue going home as the road conditions, and it was a pleasure to be there regardless.
