One technique I use when casting about for a name for a random character is just to look on a bookshelf, and piece some author names together. Avoiding better-known ones, of course ("Ursula Asimov" is fun, but likely distracting).
If you're looking for names that fit with a particular geography, class, time period, Google is your friend. Students at a Southern university? I'll bet you could find many student names on the web pages (especially under "news") of some Southern colleges or universities (again, mix and match).
