No shots, no school

Infringement of religious beliefs is not something that should happen lightly. Public health menaces are, to my mind, a heavy enough reason. Here's hoping California is a trend setter again.

In excellent news of the day, California SB277 has just been signed into law: all non-medical exemptions for school vaccination requirements are now gone. California has several hubs of people who have been refusing critical vaccinations based largely on rumors that They're Bad For You, and has had serious outbreaks of diseases like measles and pertussis as a result.

No more. The personal and religious exemptions (basically, the "I don't wanna" exemptions) have been eliminated.

I'm incredibly happy to see the state legislature move so quickly on an issue that put thousands of lives across the state at risk.

California vaccine bill SB 277 signed into law by Jerry Brown
Ending months of speculation, Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed into law Senate Bill 277, which requires almost all California schoolchildren to be fully vaccinated in order to attend public or private school, regardless of their parents’ personal or religious beliefs. California now joins only two other states — Mississippi and West Virginia — that permit only medical exemptions as legitimate reasons to sidestep vaccinations.

  1. I don't think there are any religions that explicitly condemn vaccines except maybe JW and Scientology. What most people complaining are actually using is the personal beliefs exemption. But "religious liberty" is trendy these days, especially when it's invoked well beyond the scope of personal practice.

  2. IMO, it’ll be a big Money Maker for doctors like Bob Sears, Jay Gordon, etc., who can now give medical exemptions for parents who think shots are scary because they are full of science and autism.

  3. Madison tried to frame what eventually became the religious protections in the First Amendment as "freedom of conscience," which is a much broader sort of thing. I always regretted that not having been what was adopted, but with the way "religious liberty" is being twisted these days to mean "whatever I feel strongly about, especially in a negative fashion," maybe it's just as well.
