Movie Review: "Highlander" (1986)

In the final analysis this movie is fun largely as a cult classic — cheesy, dubious quality, some fun characters, some great lines, some awful plotting. Just as well they never made any sequels, or else they might have really messed things up.

  1. The directors cut vastly improves some aspects, while drawing out or adding things best kept in their original scope. Explaining who Rachel is was a great add; extending the bad driving/ screaming scene toward the end…not so much.

  2. I always liked the original, and thought the sequels to be crap. there was no/little continuity between them. The TV show was far better, but even there the drew Conner into that.

  3. Ah, the film that led to my getting on the Internet. I bought my first PC specifically to find the fans of the subsequent TV show that I knew had to be “online.” That led to me going to a con in Denver, and meeting my husband.

I was on the “big list” for Highlander fans for years, and commend you for correctly stating that there really weren’t any movie sequels… and yes, we did have fun squabbling about what happens to severed limbs and so on. This movie had the sort of sound track that grabbed male fans, plus there were swords. And it had the romantic hero, plus kilts, which attracted the sort of female fan that likes swashbuckling adventure with a bit of bodice ripping.

DVDs certainly exist, and several Facebook groups might have a line on them. Do you want me to ask around? I’ve seen reruns pop up now and then but there hasn’t been a re-airing in original air date order, and those versions are cut up for commercials.

  4. There are 4 sequels, but I never watched the last one, Highlander: The Source, tho. I liked the 4 first films, of course the first is definitely the best, but the others are ok too. Cheesy, but good fun 😀
