A woman of many interests is our plucky Stella Winters. Let's see ...

Even as a child, her adoptive parents knew there was something a little special about their Stella.

First Impressions

Quite the movie fan, Stella got to meet Clark Gable in 1945. "A d***ed impressive young woman," the Hollywood Hearthrob noted.

During a break in the Berlin Airlift, an exhausted Stella contemplates the grey sadness of life beyond the Iron Curtain.

This Capri Pants/T-Blouse look, designed by Stella, is taking Paris by storm this 1956 season. "I like wearing dresses just fine," says this designer doll, "but there are times I like to be comfortable, too."

"There never seem to be enough vases at home to hold all the flowers people send me," Stella says with a smile. "Not that I'm complaining, mind you."
"There's been talk about a comic book of my life," Stella mentions to this journalist. "That might be fun."

"It was really quite an honor," the modest Woman of the Year told reporters. "Though I sort of wish they wouldn't teach children poor grammar with headlines like that." She laughed.

Then it's back to work for this talented young lady. She has a manuscript due to the publishers this Friday on physical fitness, and she needs to finish it before she heads off on a vacation of mountain climbing in exotic Nepal. "Of course, from what I saw there last time, I suspect I'll have to add a chapter or two when I get back."

Self-Portraits

"I've always found art to be an interesting way to 'see the world as others see it,' to paraphrase Burns. Here are some self-portaits I've done over the years."

"Doktor Bund has a few original Muchas, and I've always loved his style. Here's something I did as an homage to him, sort of a Sarah Bernhard riff."
"I did this one of myself in costume for Juliet, though it actually looks more like Ophelia to me."

"I did this off of an old photograph of me. I've always wondered what I was thinking in that photo."

"This one's a little embarrassing. It was in college, and I got John to dress up in that ridiculous wig, and tried to do the romantic, Greek, Alma-Tadema sort of bit. Looks a bit coquettish for my taste, in retrospect."
