First there were banner ads on web pages. Annoying (especially when plonked down right in the middle of content), but there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.
Then came pop-up ads, ads that opened their own windows. X10 cameras, anyone? A serious pain, and a definite drain on system resources.
And then, because folks could tell which pages these things were coming from, came pop-under ads, which generate their own window underneath other windows you have, so you run across them … later. Really annoying. I have no compunction about using products to blow these away.
The latest new “craze”? Downloadable ads. Yup. You’ll get a little popup saying, “Do you want to download this component,” just like it was Microsoft bugging you about another browser fix or plug-in. But you’re downloading ad software which, if you are lucky, will only pop up annoying ads once. If you’re not.
Just click on “No.”
Yeesh.
