Lawrence Berkeley Labs has withdrawn an earlier paper claiming to have found the heaviest element, 118, after uncovering apparent fraud and falsified data in the research.
Yeesh.
Now, it’s worth noting that this all points up the strength of the scientific method and peer review. Reported results are not just accepted on faith, but are re-tested and reexamined by others in the scientific community. It was lack of confirming results by other labs that lead LLNL to reexamine the test results.
But, still … timing sucks here, guys.
