Just as an update, the weight thang is holding steady at 194-195. I’ve a couple of ideas on how to push down further (my “final target” is 175) … but, by the same token, I know for a long while being persistently below 200 was a huge (so to speak) thing for me, so while my goal has evolved, I need to acknowledge the milestone progress made.

Best of luck to you on meeting your goal!
My plan to push down my weight is to start working out again, and get more active, bike rides and walking. I already have fairly healthy eating habits, but I need to add in the exercise part. Well I guess I need to keep practicing eating less as well 😉
But my favorite tip to give is to take the stairs whenever you have the chance. Always look for ways to add in exercise throughout the day…
Aha! A post on weight! Just what I’ve been waiting (so to speak) for!
Rereading the Nero Wolfe books has me wondering about what we consider to be very overweight. Throughout the series, people are shocked at how fat Wolfe is, and he weighs 250-285 pounds.
Last night, I was watching The Thin Man again. They discovered a decomposed body with clothes that would fit a 250-pounder and a cane. The cane was explained by his excessive weight.
It’s hard to wrap my mind around the idea that Americans were really that much thinner a mere 60-70 years ago. I weigh 230, and am by no means the fattest person where I work. I’m constantly seeing people so obese that they need electric carts to get around for their shopping. I know that the percentage of obese Americans is increasing, but it’s hard to believe it’s so radically different from the first half of the twentieth century.
Sorry to drag this off on a tangent. Does this make 195 seem better or worse, Dave?
Heh. Yeah, I would say that 200-250 is not at all uncommon for American males — and that puts Wolfe’s “seventh of a ton” into perspective.
Having been at 250 in the past, I don’t recall using a cane. But I’m glad I’m where I’m at now.
Actually, you bring up a great point Avocet… that other things need to be taken into consideration. Such as what percentage of your weight accounts for body fat. I am an example of to much fat %, I have about 25%. While this is not all that much, I can physically tell it’s too much, and I know a much healthier % would be 15-18% for me.
I remember watching a special on Dateline or one of those shows, where just by shear weight and sight the man seen on the show would surely be over weight right? Well yes, but he has actually been tested by a number of doctors, and he is deemed to be very healthy. He weighs about 300lbs but he still has a very healthy heart and is not at risk for a heart attack. And he competes in triathlons.
But for most Americans, weight by itself can typically indicate obesity and healthiness.
