The whole Imus thang

Don Imus is a cretinous creep, and I do indeed hope that the various outlets and networks that carry him fire his “oh, I was just cracking a joke in…

  1. Don Imus is a cretinous creep, and I do indeed hope that the various outlets and networks that carry him fire his “oh, I was just cracking a joke in unfortunately bad taste” sorry ass.  Along with his “producer” who prefaced his comment with one just as offensive.  It wasn’t a “gaffe,” it was simply a reprehensible, unacceptable slur, and I don’t care if it was a horrible mistake or a heart-felt sentiment, take freakin’ responsibility for what you say, okay?  Which means taking the social consequences for it.
  2. Lord save us from politicians jumping on a popular bandwagon; media going into a feeding frenzy that would scare off any Great White; victims who let themselves be further victimized by the above; and sponsors who, after waiting far too long, aver that, yes, enough people seem torqued off by the regrettable comments that they’re going to drop their sponsorship of the cretinous creep.

  1. According to Crooks and Liars, and Jon Stewart pretty much everything you said in #2 happened. Except for the victims whom let themselves be victimized. Luckily the Rutgers basketball team has more character and class than Don Imus.

Oh and MSNBC has fired his ass. I don’t think many people are going to miss him. And he prolly doesn’t worry much cause he can always get a job on Faux News.

  2. Alas, listening to the laments of the Rutgers women’s basketball team, they have been traumatized emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Huh? They have (to be charitable) allowed this jerk to define them and degrade them which is very sad and not (per Eleanor Roosevelt) solely his fault.

Last I’d heard, MSNBC had only (a) suspended him for two weeks, and (b) decided not to “live broadcast” his show after he came back on (which simply means they don’t trust him, which means, jeez, why the hell don’t they fire the asshole?). If they have actually fired him, it’s news to me (albeit both welcome and long overdue).

  3. So you appear to be right. What I saw was a blog headline, I should have went to MSNBC like I just did and saw that they were pulling his live broadcast. You apparently are right about the Rutgers team as well, they are going to be on Oprah…

But you missed another person who is claiming victimization… did you guess it? Yup Imus himself is claiming he is being victimized, claiming rights to freedom of speech have been violated. What an ass!

  4. Imus works for CBS radio, which has suspended him for two weeks. MSNBC has ended its live broadcasts of his radio show. (Not that I understand why someone would want to watch a radio show-that seems to be nonsensical.)

  5. Thanks for the details, Mary. Whenever I’ve run across his broadcasts (TV or radio) I’ve usually moved on quickly.

Imus’s charge of his free speech being violated are, of course, nonsensical. The Constitution protects against the government restricting free speech. There’s no protection against the social consequences of free speech, or the professional/commercial results from same. Offend enough people (whatever your political position) and work in a profession that requires people be interested in listening to you,and you’re going to be hosed. That’s one of the risks/costs of exercising free speech.

For a good cause, that’s sometimes a cost that folks need to be willing to pay. But to say you don’t have to pay it by wrapping yourself in the Constitution is trivializing and insulting.

  6. For what it’s worth, I had never even heard of this guy until this week.

    Let’s see… A shock jock in the news for saying something offensive? Why, that’s just… just… >yawn

  7. This just in… Imus was fired today from the radio broadcast. He is ousted completely now. Which doesn’t affect me much since I don’t waste much time with morons.
