PETA is one of those organizations that I think do as much harm to their cause as good by their actions, drawing attention to cruelties to animals that we should know about while by the same token alienating many of their potential supporters. But I join with them in applauding the Obama family’s decision, in getting a puppy for First Kids, to adopt from an animal shelter rather than purchase from a pet store or purebred dog facility.
For those who are “showing” dogs, it’s one thing, but for most people, you can get far healthier animals — for dirt cheap — from your local shelter. And you’ll know that they are animals that need a family, not dogs that were bred for sale.
Bravo.
