Had a chance to watch the Inauguration from home (working furiously most of the time), and take, of course, a picture. More random (and non-sequential) thoughts.
- Cute kids!
- CSPAN is too much fun. Never has it been more interesting to watch people standing around and chatting. On the other hand, sometimes it was annoying when the sound system was picking up an announcement from outside while the cameras were shooting a different group inside — e.g., hearing the announcement for Biden’s kids while watching Obama’s (cute!) kids.
- Great music between the acts.
- I can’t wait for the Wingnuts to parse the stumbling over Obama’s oath of office (both Obama and Roberts) to somehow prove he never took the oath and therefore is not president.
- Great inaugural speech. Powerful. Need to see the text; I strongly suspect there are quotables from it.
- Rev. Warren did a decent, if long, job of his invocation. I thought the Lord’s Prayer was a bit much — not any more objectionable per se (and there are elements of it that are fine), but as strongly a sectarian prayer as one could come up with short of the Nicene Creed.
- Cute kids — on boxes!
- Always interesting watching the interplay between the Presidents and their Families, as well as the protocols of the announcements.
- Bush, inside heading for the platform, looked a bit stunned. Obama almost looked dreamily relaxed.
- Amazing shots of the mall and the humanity there.
Amazing history. Glad I watched — and glad I DVRed it for Margie and Kitten tonight.
I was curious as to why a Baptist used the Catholic version of the Lord’s Prayer (Trespass v Debt).
Roberts hates Obama, so all the hate got in the way, and he screwed up first and Obama waited for him to correct himself.
I loved all the views of all the folks on the Mall.
I took a quick look around and the Mighty Republican Werlitzers of Faux News, Drudge and the AP and they are all saying that Obama flubbed to oath (and not Roberts, who did flub it), Faux News saying it may end up in the courts.
And so it continues.
Obama got it wrong first, by starting before Roberts had finished the first block- though he did leave a gap: Its called nerves.
From the way that Roberts and Obama looked at each other when Roberts got the word order wrong I wouldn’t have know there was any antipathy: they looked like they were going to giggle. Both errors were corrected- I think you will find Obama said all the words in the right order and next to eaach other (wont stop the right though. How many weddings would have to be annulled if they were right?)
Am I right in thinking that because it ran behind there was a four minute gap when the US didn’t have a president? (lol)
If it had been me hearing ‘Hail to the chief’ for the last time I would have brooded on my errors- do you think Bush has that capacity?
I’d have to (and will) go back and look. My impression is that Obama started repeating back before Roberts was expecting (no idea what the official break points are supposed to be), which threw Roberts off — and, yes, both men seemed amused.
I am … not surprised that the “Obama was a Kenyan born in Indonesia and gave up his citizenship in Cuba” crowd would be having j’accuse palpitations.
