- Haiti struck by devastating earthquake; diocese suffers heavy damage – Episcopal Life Online – Haiti’s Anglicans are part of the US Episcopal Church. I know our diocese in Colorado is has many contacts with Haiti, and we’ve sent a number of medical missions down there in the past (we regularly collect vitamins for folks in the countryside). I’ll be making a donation via the ERD.

- Offensive Oath Overture: Iowa Proposal Deserves To Be Ignored | The Wall of Separation – Typical. “It offends me that people aren’t forced to be the way I want them to be, so let’s put it to a vote.” Yeesh.
- It’s DHS Deja Vu All Over Again – It is either hyper-sensitivity or intentional disingenuity (as well as bad grammar) to turn “most domestic terrorists are white supremicists, anti-government, anti-abortion, survivalist, Christian Identity” types into “pro-lifers pose one of our nations greatest security risks.” It’s like changing “most pro-lifers are Christian” into “most Christians are pro-life.”

- Army prosecutes single mother for refusing to deploy and put her son in foster care. – The last paragraph sounds reasonable — but it seems to conflict with everything that comes above it.
- Think Progress » Pat Robertson Cites Haiti’s Earthquake As What Happens When You ‘Swear A Pact To The Devil’ – Pat Robertson is an ass. I don’t want to be part of any religion he’s part of. And I’m not.
- The Darwin Awards for 2009 – Always good for a wry laugh.
- Too Much Faith Will Make You Crazy: End of the World edition. – What’s impressive here is not only that God reveals His Will through every single word of the Bible, but that he makes use of one particular ENGLISH translation of the Bible to do so … plus one REVISED solar calendar system to do math with …. You’d think, for an engineer, he’d understand significant figures and limits of measurement and detectability.
- DORA THE EXPLORER’S MAKEOVER: GWEN AND I SAW IT COMIN’ » Sociological Images – I managed to miss this a year ago. A shame — as much as Dora sometimes drove me up the wall, it was good, clean, adventuresome fun.

- Lone Star Scrape: Texas Hearings On Social Studies Curriculum May Get Heated | The Wall of Separation – The sad thing is, by driving a political agenda these yahoos discredit everything they are saying from an educational standpoint. E.g., historians have argued effectively that the Great Awakening in the early 1700s played a role in the move for American Independence, and the Mayflower Compact is a perfectly legit document to study in history. The conclusion that this all means the Founders wanted this to be an explicitly “Christian Nation” is, however, goofy and partisan and political, and really has no place in elementary social studies.
