Unblogged Bits (Thu. 4-Nov-10 2331)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Disregarding mandates – “Every GOP official popping off this week about how the Senate Democratic majority and the Democratic White House have no choice but to “listen to the voters” and give Republicans what they want, should answer two straightforward questions: (1) what were you saying the first week in November, 2008? and (2) how did you honor the Dems’ mandate over the last 21 months?”
  2. Beware of 2012 polls – Listen to polls about the 2012 elections … in 2012.
  3. ‘Decoupling’ going nowhere fast – So we start with either all the tax cuts expire (on schedule, as the GOP-held Congress designed them), or, the GOP says, everything gets renewed. Obama says, fine, let’s extend the tax reductions for the middle class, but let the reductions for the rich expire. The GOP says no. Obama says, fine, let’s extend the middle class tax cuts, and extend the reductions for the rich for two years. The GOP says no. Next up, Obama simply gives in to the GOP position. And this, we hear, is bipartisanship (from the Obama White House), or Leftist tyranny (from the GOP).
  4. Gingrich Imagines The World Is Elated With GOP Midterm Election Victories – To be followed, no doubt, by Gingrich noting that it’s irrelevant what the rest off the World thinks because the US is Exceptional and the rest of all those furriner countries can go pound sand.
  5. Meet The Corporate Chairmen: Incoming Committee Chairs Have Deep Ties To Lobbyists And Big Business – The best government money can buy.
  6. Did George W. Bush Confess To A Crime? – At this point, all I can hope for is the decision of history (and Divine Judgment). I have no hope that the malfeasors of the Bush Administration will face even the slightest consequences.
  7. McConnell’s Partisan Logic vs. Obama’s Bipartisan Pipe Dream – “The point is that Obama’s hope of reaching some glorious bipartisan compromise with Republicans is a fool’s pipe dream. Obama can’t reach out to the Republicans and simply find some way to “reason” with them because of basic game theory. From the GOP’s perspective, they have already embraced the most logical and reasonable plan of action, which is to do anything they can to bring down Obama’s presidency. You can’t reach compromise with a group when they’ve concluded it is in their best interest not to compromise”
  8. Another depressing election story – Churches are large public spaces that are usually available during weekday hours. Schools often have classes that would need to be worked around, or the auditorium is used for PE or lunch, etc. I don’t have as much of a problem with a church (or any other similar space being used) as I do with the atrocious (and certainly illegal) behavior here.
  9. The clouds of Michelangelo – Gorgeous.
  10. Buy Your Jeans Now Before Cotton Prices Go Up – Hmmm. I need some new jeans.
  11. Today’s web justice driveby: Cooks Source Magazine – Yeeeeeeesh …
  12. Eschaton – If corporations are “people” for Constitutional rights purposes, can they be thrown in jail?
