A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
It’s been some years since I read “A Princess of Mars.” It’s old school fun, like munching on Fritos … and, like Fritos, there are some less healthy bits — starting with brutal Apache savages, segueing into brutal Apache/African Proxy Savages in the form of the Green Martians. But leaving aside the period racism (countered a bit by the Red Martians being an amalgam of races), the rest is a ripping tale of mysticism, romance, and two-fisted adventure. It’s hampered a bit by some period stiffness in the writing style, but, by gad, it will make a fine movie some day (with CG thoats!).
Not feeling so enthused by the book (free for the Kindle) that I’m interested in reading the rest of the series. But I can imagine doing so some time in the future …
(I read this back in April and wrote a review on Goodreads, but apparently didn’t mirror that here on the blog. Consider that corrected.)
