A lengthy article from the National Journal on the (d)evolution in the GOP into a monolith that is — outwardly at least — silent at best and skeptical at worst over client change science. Even as the evidence has solidified, the party politicians have backtracked, flip-flopped, or hardened their positions.
And the answer is very simple, as Tim Phillips, president of Americans for Prosperity, the Koch-founded Super-PAC explains: “If you look at where the situation was three years ago and where it is today, there’s been a dramatic turnaround. Most of these candidates have figured out that the science has become political. We’ve made great headway. What it means for candidates on the Republican side is, if you … buy into green energy or you play footsie on this issue, you do so at your political peril. The vast majority of people who are involved in the [Republican] nominating process—the conventions and the primaries—are suspect of the science. And that’s our influence. Groups like Americans for Prosperity have done it."
"Science has become political." Of course, it hasn't but following science, when it inconveniences the Kochs and others has become political. Which is disgusting, dangerous, and while I have no doubt it will rate as one of the most shameful chapters in GOP history (if not one of the final), it hurts every man, woman, and child on the planet. Including Republicans. #ddtb

Republican politicians are increasingly questioning or flatly denying the established science of climate change. Why now?
Indeed.
