***Dave Does the Comics – Issue 35 (29 Apr 2012)

Well, after having way too many comics to catch up on the previous two weeks, this week is very, very short. And, unfortunately, not much to write home about.

The podcast playback button is at the bottom of the post. The covers below are for the issues I gave an individual review of; hover over the covers below to see the ratings out of 5 stars (with an occasional comment).

Astonishing X-Men #49 - Best Cover I Saw This Week
Avengers Assemble Vol. 2 - Best TPB I read this week
FF #17 - Best (or at least funniest) comic I read this week

Here’s hoping for a better week next week!

  1. I’ve been out of the comics loop for a while but I did hear about Johnny Storm dying and *gasp*…..he’s back? Inconthievable…..
Once again, I’ll blink in amazement that it took this long to get out twelve issues of “The Twelve”.

Did you think it was worth the wait for the individual issues?

All in all, I (as always) enjoyed the podcast so keep up the good work.

    1. Thanks, Mark! 🙂

Yes, the Least Biggest Surprise in the World is that Johnny is back. Though his, um, backness was handled relatively well, once one gets over the (very small any more) suspension of disbelief.

I think “The Twelve” suffered awfully for the huge gaps in its coming out. I think it was a pretty decent series — not spectacular by any means, but interesting and entertaining and enjoyable — but the production gaps did it no favors.

      Thanks again.

  2. At Emerals City Comic Con in 2011, writer Scott Lobdell was offering “free writer sketches.” I overheard him telling a fan that Johhny Storm was dead, and I opined that Johnny wasn’t really dead. He grabbed a sheet of paper and drew this for me, thus confirming that Johnny was truly dead.

I look forward to showing him that at a future con.
    😀

  3. I hadn’t been reading Battle Scars. Your review made it sound important, so…

    sigh

Once again, comics are changed to match an adaptation in another medium. I don’t mind when it’s the addition of something cool that was introduced in the other medium, such as kryptonite or Harley Quinn, but it bugs me when they change something simply to make it more recognizable to people who aren’t already reading the comics (Spidey’s organic web-shooters, J.J.J.’s mustache, and now this).

I don’t know. Does this make me some sort of elitist snob?
    🙁

    1. @Avo – It was important insofar as it’s a significant (for now) change in the MU.

As I said, the writing’s been on the wall with this one for a while. Pretty much every place *but* the canonical print MU had already made the change (Ultimate U, movies, cartoons), to the point where I had to wonder what sort of questions kids might ask (“Who’s that?”).

What bugs me less than the change per se is that (a) it’s tossing a character with a long, long, and interesting history in favor of a (b) created-for-purpose not-nearly-so-interesting character, and doing so for such an out-of-universe reason. It’s not a substitution, it’s a replacement (and a poor one).
