Teach the Controversy!

Because if someone thinks anything different, no matter their qualifications or or basis for doing so, we should "teach" that and lend it equal weight, right?

  1. Science has become extremely political. It holds on to a theory far longer than it should, because proponents of said theory act as gate keepers to publications and grants–the material for scientific progress. Dissenters, whatever their motivation, are blocked until the evidence for scientific revolution becomes so great, that science must correct itself to save face. There is controversy in every scientific field with this dynamic.

  2. It doesn't load for me either. The page loads but the comic only partial.

Chris – science has always been political. But at least it does correct itself.  And people with new hypotheses are not "dissenters" – they propose, they attempt to show. Their explanation must turn out to be better than the existing one.  If they are right, eventually it will become plain to everyone.

  3. Indeed, hearty congratulations to Microsoft, for finally creating a browser that isn't all that bad, really. After 8 previous versions. But which still – within the last two weeks, stalled a web project from completion that worked perfectly in all the other browsers. (slow clap)

  4. I use IE frequently at work (as we still have older apps that require it). It's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick (IE6), but it still makes me feel like I'm having to wear a business suit and tie.
