Those damn, greedy, selfish, lazy, unionized teachers

Sitting on their asses and drawing big paychecks and teaching our children stoopid stuff and taking the summer off and using their union dues to destroy the country on the backs of the taxpayers, am I right?  Am I right?

No, I'm not. At least not in Newtown.

America’s Teachers: Heroes or Greedy Moochers at the Public Trough?
I’ll be brief here. Let’s just note that the heroic teachers who died while courageously trying to protect their kids at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, and the others who survived bu…

  1. I think anyone, with any sense, knows that no one believes that all teachers are lazy, whatevers (add description here).

I, personally, know three teachers. Of those three, one is very lazy and only talks about getting tenured so they 'don't have to worry about things'. Oh yeah, and so they "could have summers off". The other two seem very dedicated to their work and talk about nothing but getting the kids to learn.

This article seems like it's, basically, trying to use some sort of 'guilt' tactics on those who call out the lazy educators out there. "Gasp! How dare you not worship all teachers!! Look at what these other brave teachers did"

Regardless of what some may think there are lazy teachers out there.

What those teachers in Newtown did had nothing to do with them being "teachers" and everything to do with them as people.

  2. I would say that there is, in certain quarters, a generalized view that most public school teachers are the epitome of unionized public workers, with tenure to boot, and that they are at their job, not out of love of learning, or of the kids, but as an "easy" way to feed off the public trough. Folks in that quarter will admit there may be a few hard-working ones, but "teachers unions" and tenure and gubbiment bureaucrats have ruined public education, with the teachers on the front line of that effort.

The letter quoted in the article is indicative of that line of thought.

  3. I believe, like so many topics in American "discourse", teachers suffer by the broad brush. If those critical of work ethic made it clear that they were considering a minority of the whole, it could be discussed fairly. That rarely happens. What is more common are sweeping generalizations and demonization of the opposite fiefdoms.
