I had a coworker argue in favor of gun rights by saying that the Old West was the most polite society ever.
1. Why is that a criterion? The number of deaths by gunshot is irrelevant if politeness increases?
2. How does he know that it was polite? By watching westerns?
3. If we are going that way, I maintain that medieval England was more polite, and they had no guns.
And how often were towns, or portions thereof, ruled as gun-free zones? That was definitely not heard of, and was enforced by the sheriff.
In the so called ‘old’ or ‘wild’ west, there were towns that banned guns inside town limits. Many ranches did too.
The biggest drop in English murder rates came when Gentlemen were banned from wearing swords in public.
