Movie Review: "Cars" (2006)

How did we miss this one? I dunno — maybe it just didn't sound all that interesting.  But since we were going to be visiting Disney's California Adventure, home of "Cars Land", we had to watch it.

And I'm glad we did, both as a fun movie and as an utter prerequisite to visiting the astonishing replica of Radiator Springs at DCA.

A ★★★★ review of Cars (2006)
For some reason, this was one of the recent Pixar films we didn’t watch as a family. And now I’m sort of sorry (though I’m glad I watched it now). While the structure of the plot (prideful protagonist takes huge fall; humble friends teach him true lesson of life; reformed protagonist succeeds on his own terms) is something of a cliche, the technical execution and details of the film make it something special. 1. For me, it treads (even moreso than Toy Story, ironically) into "Let's make a movie franchise that's just built for toy manufacture" territory.  It's not, but it still has that feel (I keep expecting to see giant hands reaching down from the heavens to push the vehicles around).

I haven't seen Cars 2, or Planes, and really have little desire to.  I enjoyed this one.  Its weakness is that it's really a very simple plot (overproud guy gets taken down a notch or three, learns what's important in life, wins same), even if delivered in a very rich tapestry.

  2. Being a person that loves cars as art and design, I spent the entire move just being wow’d by the cars in the movie. Just about every minute was spent going “Wow, there’s a…” as I spotted one of my favourite cars from the past. I loved that the voice of wisdom was a Hudson Hornet and I loved all the attention to detail like how at night all the cylinders at Flo’s fired in the correct pattern for a Ford V8, the flowers made of tail lights…and then to be able to walk into it at DCA when all of the lights come on at night filled me with the same feeling as it had watching it in the movie.

There was just so much car lore crammed into the movie that for me the weak cliche story was just a minor note in the OMG moments that was the rest of the movie
