Facebook gets out of the email biz

Way back in 2010, Facebook took over the world of email. Leveraging their massive social network's pervasiveness, they gave all their members an @facebook.com email address and set it as the default contact address for everyone's account.

Within months, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, AOL, and even Gmail had dwindled to mere trickles in the emailverse, as Facebook proved its power to take over all channels of communication, and began to eye Instant Messaging.

Well, no, that middle part never happened. Folks didn't drop their email service from elsewhere. More importantly, they didn't start using Facebook mail. Which will be shuttered in March.

But with the multi-billion dollar acquisition of WhatsApp, FB does seem to be eyeing Instant Messaging as their next big thing …

  1. Thank goodness for that. I was incensed when they changed my default email address on FB without asking and I get pissed every time someone says "I sent you an email" when they mean they left a message on FB.

  2. Same…it was a bizarre change–and frankly it pushed me away from FB as a communication mechanism.

Just like their "write over all your Android widgets" policy caused me to stop updating my FB phone app.

  3. Finally! Change I can bring about just by not giving a f* …
(Though I did change the default email address when that happened. In what universe did the Zuckerbeast think we would want him handling our email?)
