It's fascinating to see how the projection and film reels all work together, a culmination of technology a century or so old. That said, the sad lamentations of how digital film watching just "isn't the same" strikes me as akin to the vinyl-vs-CD debates — I don't need the soft clackity-clack of the projector in the quiet scenes to feel like I'm watching a "real" movie. I'm sorry to see skilled people losing their jobs, but I'm not sure that's a reason to not see this technology change.
Digital killed the movie reel stars
An interesting, if sometimes over-glurdgy, documentary on the end of film reel projection at movie theaters, as studios move to shipping just digital versions of their movies, replacing massive reels of celluloid with removable hard drives.
