Science is certainly killing off Religion as arbiter of objective reality. Science explores, explains, and demonstrates through prediction what the empirical world is.
Fundamentalism coupled with religious extremism is doing a great job of killing off Religion as a guide to meaning and values, esp. by framing Religion vs. Science as a fight over the same territory; it defines religion as the objective, empirical reality … and, as it fails, it pulls the rest of Religion down with it.
Which is a shame, because I think Religion has a lot more to offer than "Women Are Inferior to Men because They Were Made Second" and Young Earth Creationism and "Climate Change Is a Lie because Genesis 8:22 Says So!"

To begin with science was religion. RIG VEDA the oldest religious book in the world says so in 10552 verses but who listerns? Every scientific discovery in fundamental science was unvieled by the book thousands of years ago. There was then no room for fundamentalism, the compilers lived by facts of science. They devised
a language in that long antiquity which still is considered the best language in the world.
True enough: science has worn the necessity of it, while extremism has worn the desire for it.
It retains some of both attributes, but neither shine brightly enough to serve as a beacon.
