Boys and their toys (BUT HOW CAN WE TELL?!)

Quoth Fox News' Brian Kilmeade: "If you go to buy a gift for a boy who's nine or six or a girl who's nine or six, you want to be able to go to that section and pick out a toy they might want. Now you have to sit there and look at a blended area and wonder is this for a boy or is this for a girl?"

If you don't know what gift a particular recipient actually wants, then maybe you shouldn't be buying them a gift (I understand gift cards are popular).

If you really feel the need to give a gift, and you don't have a kid along to consult with, then maybe you should buy them something you think you would have enjoyed.

If you are so uncertain whether a particular toy is "for" a boy or girl, then maybe the gender neutralists have already eaten your brain!

Yeesh.

  1. See, I would't ask "is this for a boy or a girl." I would ask "will the child enjoy this." Of course, most of the gifts I would give wouldn't be all that gender-specific. "Wait… Is this Harry Potter book for boys or girls???" "Is this a boy's or a girl's Settlers of Catan???"

Seriously, if you can't decide if a Barbie is intended for boys or a girls unless it's in a clearly marked "Girls" section, you're too far gone too even understand gender differences.

How do these people shop for groceries? "Are these frozen waffles for breakfast or dinner? Somebody help me!" "Beef is next to fish. Is it seafood???"

This shouldn't be an issue. Have these people lost their common sense? It doesn't take a PhD to shop for toys.

  2. For the people who are interested into coercing their kids into the roles the parents think they should become, this is threatening. For people who think kids should grow up to be the best people they can become, this is a non-issue. The responses to this signal how people think kids should be raised.

  3. Honestly, every complaint I've ever, ever heard along the lines of "Won't someone please think of the children" actually translates as "I can't be bothered to get to know my child or what they're doing, so everyone else should pick up the slack for me."

  4. +Scott Randel Clearly they need separate "boys food" and "girls food" sections, since, obviously, natural gender roles means eating completely different things, and how could you tell which food to buy for your little boy otherwise?

  5. See, like I said, this clearly signals people buying toys for kids they don't know and therefore have no idea what to buy. And gift cards are good for boys and girls …

And even there … have you been to the toy aisles at Target? The gender branding is largely along the lines of "this is an aisle full of Barbie, Rainbow Brite, and My Little Pony," festooned in hot pink, magenta, and purple, vs "this is an aisle full of Star Wars action figures, DC action figures, GI Joe action figures, trucks, and super-soakers." I don't actually even recall gender signs because the grouping and toy manufacturer marketing was crystal clear on the topic.

If what this new policy means is that the brands will be in alphabetical order (Barbie, DC, GI Goe, My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, , Star Wars), I really don't any of the pundits will be all that confused over whether it's a "girl toy" or "boy toy."
