The continued polling success of Donald Trump is beginning to spell more than how people react to a well-known person running for office. Instead, it's starting to be about the thrill of changing the Overton Window (what ideas are acceptable to discuss) in a time when people are feeling stressed about Other folk having a seat at the political table, and gut-pleasing proposals from some quarters are considered unspeakable.
Thus, the Donald says stuff, and suddenly it's open (and, for other GOP candidates, obligatory) to make such thoughts part of the reasonable political discourse and worthy of consideration.

We can hope the same effect holds for Bernie Sanders and his overtly socialist agenda: finally someone is willing to talk seriously about different social structures.
Oddly enough, the GOP seems a lot more worried about Trump than Sanders.
