You may have insurance coverage with a hospital — but that doesn't mean those ER docs will accept it, or have negotiated the same rates. So remember, next time you're being hauled to the ER because of a life-threatening injury or condition, do your research en route and ask for a diversion to a different hospital if the rates aren't what you can afford.

  1. +Paula Moore I'm inclined to agree. There is value in a measure of competition, but the current opacity of the system, the huge stakes involved for individuals, and the issues with "comparison shopping" whilst dealing with literal matters of life and death, make the current system seriously problematic.
