Yesterday was the centennial of Jack “King” Kirby’s birth. I came somewhat late to appreciating Kirby and his comic book magic. His idiosyncratic art style and high-to-the-point-of-being-high concept creativity are an acquired taste, and I liked more realistic, more mainstream concepts.
Over time, though, I’ve come to appreciate the debt modern comics owes to Kirby, both visually and conceptually. You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a hero or villain that Kirby either developed or (especially on the DC side) created supporting cast and iconic antagonists for.
I actually had an opportunity, many years ago, to briefly meet Kirby and his wife, as a volunteer at an information booth at the San Diego Comic Con. Jack and I didn’t exchange any words, which I regret, but maybe I can make it up by sharing this awesome look at 100 characters/groups that Kirby either created himself or developed the visuals for. The only thing not mentioned here is the infamous Kirby Krackle [1].
He was the King. Thanks, Jack.

The King. Some of these characters, like teh Absorbing Man, got short shrift when shown on the big or small screens.
+Laura Ess True. On the other hand, we're going to get Hela in full Kirby headgear (for at least part of the movie) in the next Thor film, so that'll be seven shades of awesome.
(And the Executioner, too!)
