Vladimir Putin explains the sort of political system he thinks the US needs

Good of Vladimir “Russia is our friend” Putin, the one Donald Trump always admires as a leader, has a good scolding for Americans. They are not respectful enough to the President of the United States, Putin asserts.

“Mr. Trump was elected by the American people. And at least for this reason it is necessary to show respect for him, even if you do not agree with some of his positions,” the Russian leader said. “Inside the country, disrespect is shown for him. This is a regrettable negative component of the US political system,” Putin said. In Putin’s opinion, “one can argue but one can’t show disrespect, even not for him personally but for those people who voted for him.”

“I believe that the president of the United States does not need any advice because one has to possess certain talent and go through this trial to be elected, even without having the experience of such big administrative work. He has done this,” the Russian leader said.

Which is all fine, well, and expected for the guy who’s the next best thing to an old Soviet-style Premier in Russia, and whose political opponents, critics, and journalists find themselves bankrupted, imprisoned, exiled, or assassinated.

But what of Trump’s, ah, mercurial nature? Oh, well, pish-tosh — that’s just the stress of all that disrespect and obstructionism that he has to put up with. If only we were kinder and gentler toward him and let him have is way with things, then Donald would smile a lot more.

“His unpredictability is not only based on his nature, another reason for it is the great domestic resistance, as they actually prevent him from implementing any of his electoral initiatives,” the Russian leader noted. “So it is not right to say that unpredictability is in his nature – it depends on the US political system,” Putin said.

I’d love to have some enterprising reporter ask our poor, beleaguered President what he thinks about Putin’s observations, and whether American politics would be better if we were more in line with how Russian politics works.

  1. Putin and his magic tricks. Of course the election of Trump is the manifestation of a bug in the US political system. His being mocked and disrespected, however, far from being the pathology, is the mitigation of the pathology. And of course Putin is just upset by the bad example the American people gives to the Russian people.
