I love the Rankin/Bass production of The Hobbit, and can still sing most of the songs from it. I was unaware, though, of the Studio Ghibli connection.
My only argument with this article is that it fails to mention some of the remarkable voice talent that went into this cartoon: Orson Bean as Bilbo, Hans Conried as Thorin, John Huston as Gandalf, Otto Preminger as the Elf King, Richard Boone as Smaug, as well as famous voice artists Paul Frees and Don Messick. It's really an all-star cast, for all the show's idiosyncrasies.
