It is a undisputed fact that you can tell a lot about geeks by their desktop action figures. Do their tastes run to anime, Lord of the Rings, McFarlane-crafted monstrosities (both by design and in concept), superheroes (realisted vs. cartoony vs. 80s classic), video game characters, fantasy figurines (lead, pewter, prepainted plastic, etc.), soldiers (Yo Joe!), Star Trek, Star Wars (again, 80s classic or modern or modern-retro-80s classic) or replica props.

For the record, I have a shelf of photographs and toys in my office, which currently include:

Figures:

  • Mickey Mouse (business card holder)
  • Hellboy
  • Babar
  • The Flash (Jay Garrick)
  • Space Ghost
  • The Tick
  • Yakko
  • Belle
  • Goofy
  • Eeyore
  • Hawkgirl
  • Swiper
  • A couple of generic lizards
  • A good luck white Japanese cat

Vehicles:

  • Serenity
  • A Centauri shuttle
  • A Minbari cruiser
  • A Starfury
  • An Imperial AT-ST
  • An SR-71
  • The Mach 5

I have a few others tucked away in a cabinet, but that will do for the moment.

Not everything sits on this shelf.  Every couple of weeks I rotate a few of them into my window.

  1. I love the way they intermingle with the other “personal” stuff like pictures of Kitten. Next time I am in my office (Thursday) I will have to do a picture of my space. Oddly less populated since I joined HR. Though I proudly defy policy with a few things outside my cube including my favorite title “Missionary to the data heathens”

  2. I have very few action figures. In fact, I’ve never purchased one. I have Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Doctor Octopus (Christmas present from a comic-collecting co-worker), Batman, Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus from McDonald’s (from a former co-worker who was still there after I left), and Batman – Animated Series (from a co-worker). My room-mate’s dog chewed up one of the Spider-Man figures, as well as my Road-Runner (received when I turned in enough tickets from games at the local arcade), which means that the Coyote is now using his rocket pack to chase after nothing. 🙁

I did once buy a 3-pack of squishy Dilbert figures, but the dog got them, too.

  3. I haven’t bought a lot of them, by any means — but a few that caught my eye (and didn’t cost a bloody fortune)? Yeah.

One of these days I’m going to steal back all of the Justice League AFs I bought for Katherine …

  4. When we first met, but before we were dating, Dina used to buy me little Superman cartoon and Dexter toys from the nearby Burger King to add to my collection.

Now Ben and Naomi fight over the Dexter spinning top. The rest of the Superman toys are tucked away.
