The painful reality of the tribute avatar

A lot of folk are changing their avatar / profile picture in various social media to represent the French flag, in tribute to the suffering in Paris from the brutal attacks there. And it's a nice thought and gesture of solidarity.

But … as +Steve S notes, passing on +Pam Adger's comments, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Islamist_terrorist_attacks provides a list of Islamicist attacks that are happening on a regular basis in various parts of the world — but that don't get the attention because, frankly, it's not Paris (or London or New York, etc.), but (hand-waving) other places where, well, one expects such things.

For that matter, Syria, the place where so many of those refugees are fleeing from, sees civilian death tolls like that in Paris happening on a daily basis. That's why people are fleeing that country.

Which isn't to say by any means don't care about what happened in Paris, or don't reach out in compassion to those who have suffered. Just don't also assume they are the only ones who have suffered in this as well. If the people of France are worthy of sympathy and support and remembrance (and they are), then the people of Syria, Ankara, Suruc, Beirut, and so many other places are as well.

  1. I'm conflicted, as I don't want to discourage anyone from either recognizing this particular crime, or reaching out in support to those folk in Paris. Just to remember that there are others suffering, too, from both related violence — or, heck, from any number of awful things.
