Unblogged Bits (Wed. 22-Sep-10 1731)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Flashback: Bush National Security Strategy Said We Must Be ‘Able To Absorb The Impact’ Of A Terrorist Attack – Liz Cheney shooting her mouth off over something Obama said when her father and her father’s administration said the same thing? Inconceivable!
  2. Media’s Handling Of Marty Peretz Versus Helen Thomas Highlights Double Standard – Yup.
  3. Get Out The %@$ing Eggnog, It’s Christmastime At Home Depotsigh If the Right wants to complain about a “War on Christmas,” it would behoove them to bitch more about its commercial abuse through this sort of thing. (Though I will say, an egg nog sounds good right now …)
  4. ZoneAlarm caught using fake antivirus scare tactics – Check Point’s spokescritter speaks with forked tongue. Even if they didn’t mean to suggest that the PC is already infected, it’s basic Scare Tactics 101 (akin to those infuriating news blurbs, “Your child may be about to die horribly — we’ll tell you how to avoid it when we get back …”). I stopped using ZA many years ago, and this just makes me all the more glad I did.
  5. Real Health Care Benefits Kick In Thursday – Worth saying, and repeating, over and over. And remember, all of these are things that GOP ideologues are swearing a “blood oath” to get rid of, gut, or defund. The election does make a difference.
  6. Obama To Hedge Fund Managers: You Should Be Taxed At Least As Much As Your Secretary: Alan
  7. Fly trap made from vinegar and dish soap – Making a note for the rare occasions when we have this problem.
  8. Ask Design Mom: Letting Kids Decorate – Kay got to choose her room colors (both bedroom and bathroom),and while a bit … um, vivid, they work for her and make her happy and don’t drive us screaming from the house. Which, I think, are all good things.
  9. 10 Reasons Why Google Desktop Will Be Discontinued – With my new work machine, I gave up on Google Destktop and went for the Microsoft desktop search engine. Unfortunately, it’s pretty crappy, too.
  10. Pornography: cause & effect (technical) – And everybody chime in with the favorite tune from “Avenue Q” …
  11. For clean hands, don’t rub, scrub with a paper towel – health – 18 September 2010 – New Scientist
  12. Potato Smiles FAIL – Ok. I laughed. The stuff of nightmares.
  13. Which Came First: The Regulation Or The Egg? – “If someone murdered nine people, and wounded five hundred, with a gun, we Americans would have paid as much attention to this as we did the Columbine high school massacre, or Nidal Malik Hassan, or Charles Whitman. … Were it a terrorist attack, we’d be at Code Hysteria. Imagine the attention paid if al Qaeda had done this.” But, remember, FEDERAL REGULATION (and enforcement thereof) IS EVIL AND HURTS PUPPIES AND MAKES BABY JESUS SAD.
  14. The old-fashioned way – The WSJ is seriously arguing that “inherited wealth” is diminishing because it’s such a small amount of multi-millionaires’ net worth? How about, multi-millionaires are finding ways to leverage their inherited wealth many times over more than in the past as an alternate explanation.
  15. It takes a lot, but there are lines not to be crossed: Steve Benen
  16. The American capacity to ‘absorb’ adversity – This strikes me as one of the silliest attacks on Obama to date. Touting the resiliency and determination of the United States is supposedly now inviting another attack, or demonstrates that Obama doesn’t care about American’s dying? Really? I thought the old criticism was that Obama was an apologist who didn’t think much of the US; now he’s being criticized (by the same people) for arguing for America’s strength.
  17. One of the most effective ads of the cycle – As someone who follows the IT industry, and who was very in tune with what was going on at HP during Fiorina’s tenure, I’m flabbergasted that she’s running ON her record, rather than away from it.
