I remember when Brian came out, when I was in college. Doubtless we’ll get the same sort of blasphemy accusations now as we got then. And doubtless both the movie and the foofoorah will be just as entertaining, too.

  1. MAN #2: You hear that? Blessed are the Greek.
    GREGORY: The Greek?
MAN #2: Mmm. Well, apparently, he’s going to inherit the earth.
GREGORY: Did anyone catch his name?
MRS. BIG NOSE: You’re not going to thump anybody.
MR. BIG NOSE: I’ll thump him if he calls me ‘Big Nose’ again.
MR. CHEEKY: Oh, shut up, Big Nose.
MR. BIG NOSE: Ah! All right. I warned you. I really will slug you so hard–
MRS. BIG NOSE: Oh, it’s the meek! Blessed are the meek! Oh, that’s nice, isn’t it? I’m glad they’re getting something, ’cause they have a hell of a time.

  2. A quote from the story:

“We decided this is an important time to re-release this film, to provide some counter-programming to ‘The Passion,’ ” Jaglom told Reuters. “I intend it, hopefully, to serve as an antidote to all the hysteria about Mel’s movie.”

I enjoy Monty Python but this quote proves Hollywood doesn’t get it. I think they will be very disappointed. The box office take of The Passion is already 15x what Life of Brian took in. Even though I am a Protestant and Mel Gibson portrayed a very Catholic version of The Passion, what comes through is this is a reverent portrayal. It is this reverence particularly where everything in the culture is irreverent with respect to Christianity that drives people to the movie. In the end, Jaglom and the rest of Hollywood will be just as naive and clueless as Eric Idle’s Lead Singer Crucifee.
