BT05 – To Save You, Why Must I Blog About You?

Back to the grindstone, or something like that. It’s now quiet and still in the house — except for all the music coming out of my headphones …

Comics I’m actively reading …

  • Powers #11 (Icon): Deena reacts … badly … to being attacked by her ex-boyfriend, using her new powers to kill him. So that means she has to hide the body. Which means she has to start lying to folks about what she’s been doing, whether she’s seen the guy, etc. Ooooh, a lie like that won’t stay buried long. The usual good stuff from Bendis and Oeming.
  • Planetary #23 (Wildstorm): The origin of the Drummer — which, like much of Planetary, is more of a tale of Elijah Snow, what he was like a couple of decades ago, and what he’s like now. Good, intense drama from Ellis and Cassaday. Can’t wait for the next TPB.

  • The Pulse #9 (Marvel): The mystery of the “Secret War” — and the search for Luke by Jessica — continues, complete with twists and turns and confrontations and Wolverine and Iron Fist and Nick Fury. More solid Bendis dialoging. (I decline to discuss #10, as it is a House of M crossover, except to say that it sucks a bit less than most of the HoM titles.)

  • The Punisher #23 (Marvel MAX): The Punisher’s gang war continues. He gets wounded. He has sex (!). Someone else who wants to doesn’t. The mobs experience fear and dissension in the ranks. Just another day in Garth Ennis’ paradise. A good read, though, as Ennis has toned down the ridiculous humor component from his earlier history on the title.

  • Queen & Country Declassified #2 (of 3) (Oni): Conspiracy and counter-conspiracy in Northern Ireland, with neither the IRA nor the British military coming off particularly well (and, thus, a rather realistic portrayal). Reasonably decent read, though I think I’ll eschew future Q&C books that aren’t from Rucka.

  • Red Sonja #1 (Dynamite): Oeming and Carey do a fine job with the “She-Devil with a Sword” (and with, of course, the scale mail bikini), as does Mel Rubi on the art. Good sword and sorcery, if not so far spectacular (nor as good as the new Conan series). Dynamite, though, needs to cut back on the “alternative cover” madness. That is *not* how to make money in the comics game.
