One of the nicest things about staying with Mom at the holidays

Our friends Mark and Don got married at the Houdini Mansion in the Hollywood Hills on Halloween, so, of course, they made it a costume and/or masquerade affair, and much fun was had by all.
After a few false starts, we ended up (at the recommendations of Stan and Mary) at a faboo shop called "Disguises" here in the Denver area. Which had, among other things, a major steampunk clothing area. Between that, another area of the store with some steampunky props, a quick visit to a local craft shop for chains, a bit of Amazon searching, the acquisition of a bowler hat, the gathering together of various items already owned that could potentially be of use (some Girl Genius swag, some gloves I had from a RennFaire costume, some welding goggles I'd picked up, some jewelry Margie had, the cane Margie gave me for our wedding), and Margie's creative genius with a glue gun and a needle …
… we ended up with something passably steampunk. And even got some kudos as to the result.
We are now, of course, doomed (DOOMED!) to ever-burgeoning steampunk accessorizing and costuming. I suppose it's better than being a Furry (not that there's anything wrong with that), and marginally more socially acceptable than SCA fanaticism (nor with that). And, of course, doing all of this whilst unemployed was likely not the most cost-effective way of stretching out the savings account.
But we had fun. Pip-pip, and tally-ho!
So glad to see we’ve visiting Southern California *before* next week’s cold snap 80s-90s much better than 60s-70s, right? #markdonwedding
This isn't a huge surprise if you do much air travel (from which vantage it is, in fact, noticed). But it's still pretty cool.
Forty Years Ago, America’s Farms Completely Changed Their Shape—And No One Noticed
Do you think you know what a cornfield looks like? You don’t know what a cornfield looks like.
Well, heck — I posted about the Boulder Craft Brew Festival, and didn't note the beers I'd found particularly keen.
Fate – Uror Gose
12° – Walter's White
Bru – "Dim" Wit
Odd 13 – Imperial Saisson
J Wells – Hef
West Flanders – Angry Monk
Walnut – Please Don't Gose
Avery – Perzik Saisson
Sanitas – saisson
Twisted Pine – Recreational Wheat
Boulder Brewery – Shake Chocolate Porter
I've never had a Gose before, and there were two of them on my list (more info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gose).
Anyway, that list is my particular kink of things I liked, so it's not a moral imperative or anything like that. But if someone wanted to get me a sixpack of something as a gift …
We have a fun time yesterday at the Boulder Craft Beer Festival. It was the second year, and while they had expanded the offerings a lot (20+ local craft breweries), it felt a bit better organized. We didn't have any torrential rain as interrupted last year, but it wasn't too hot.
We arrived a bit before 1 (when the plebes like us got to go in), and the line was about 15 minutes long. The festival was sold out, though, and by the time we had gotten through the line, the queue was twice as long.
Inside, starting off the queues to the tents were short — sometimes too short to finish your sampler before getting to the front of the next line. Things lengthened quite a bit by the end of the day, which still didn't turn out too badly — time enough to enjoy (or not) the sample, to chit-chat a bit, and digest.
We wrapped up (with a meal break) after not too many hours, pleasantly full and mellow. We adjourned (Jackie being along as our Designated Driver) back to Pedzwell, where we lounged around a bit, then headed off.
Altogether, a nice way to spend a Saturday.
RT @pedzz_bd A wonderful time at the Boulder Craft Beer fest with @meoswell @Three_Star_Dave @MargieKleerup and Scott Wolfgang and Jackie Faulk.
I'd just have to go back again.
So … still looking forward to visiting Greenwich.
The Real Greenwich Prime Meridian
Thanks to modern navigational tools we now know that the true prime meridian runs through a park next door
Having both business traveled and B&Bd in the UK, I knew a lot of these (the switches and voltage), though I never noticed about the window screens before. Fun stuff.
(As always, I'm sure that all these generalizations have regional, modernity, and personal design decision variations, except for maybe the switched outlets, which seem ubiquitous.)

I'm not a big College Reunion / Alumni Association kind of guy. I'm still in touch with most of my classmates from +Pomona College with whom I'd like to be in touch, and I'm not a guy who enjoys chit-chat. But though I missed my 30th, +Margie Kleerup and +Mary Oswell decided they were going to theirs, so +Stan Pedzick and I tagged along.
And it was fun, seeing the campus again, stopping by Juanita's for a burrito, seeing some of the old faces I knew from my time there, shaking my head at what had changed even while acknowledging that many changes were for the better …
I probably won't go back again any time soon, but I'm glad I went.
Most of the photos I took were with my "real" camera, but I took a variety with my phone, the better of which are attached.
Heading home Has been observed in 15, @MargieKleerup will be at 45th, I’ll be at 47th year reunion. Sounds like a plan. #PomonaAW15
Class dinner entertained delightfully by the Women’s Blue & White Love the a capella. #PomonaAW15
Easy to pooh-pooh the rah-rah of Alumni Weekend, but singing the alma mater in a crowded auditorium gives me chills #PomonaAW15
