After a long dry spell while the folks were out visiting for the Labor Day weekend, got back into the CoH thang with a bang.
Got home early enough that I had a chance to play a bit with Big Lungs while watching over Katherine. Fun with sonics, and had a passerby express admiration for the name. Meanwhile, Margie reset Star Protector to be Sonic/Rad Defender. Eventually, the two of them are intended to run around together.
After dinner, once Margie was on, we brought on Psi-clone and Amorpha. Started off with some impromptu RP with Healing Rayne, followed by …
… well, followed by discovering that I really needed to download the newest version of HeroStats to work with I5 properly. Which was annoying to discover but painless to remedy.
Woo-hoo! Took a trek all the way across Crey’s Folly to do it, but Psi-clone got the Lollypop.
Which is very cool, but has its problems. First off, annoyingly, it doesn’t seem to be affected by Containment — which means my Spectral Wounds does nearly as much damage (up front) as the Nemesis Staff, which is just kind of wrong.
Second off — well, PC is just not a blaster. He’s not all about the smiting. Thus, giving him a Big Gun just means that he’s going to shoot it at someone who will then shoot back at him.
Still, it’s very cool, and I’ll be making maximal use of it over the next few days.
Demonstrations of the second point came up a bit thereafter. We were heading to a mish in IP, when someone sent out a broadcast about a Giant Octopus …
Amorpha and I tracked it down in the SW corner of the bay. I, of course, wanted to lay into the critter. Margie, being the planner that she is, started trying to gather together a team, etc., etc., all the right strategies. So I fidgeted. And waited. Sure it was going to flee. Positive another team was going to get to it first.
And then we were ready! And I charge in! And zapped it with the staff! And …
Bam. Thwack. Zorch.
Dead in the water. Literally.
(Grumbles.) I flew back as fast as I could (which, given the speed of Fly is maddeningly slow). I did, though, get back after just one tentacle had been taken down.
After that, it was a lot of fun. Zoom in. Zap with the staff. Zoom waaaaay back out. Heal. Heal. Heal some more. WTF, there are no other healers on our team of 8? Evidently not. Zap. Heal.
Rest.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
By the end of the battle, I hadn’t quite cleared off my debt (dagnabbit) — and Amorpha had died once, too — but I’d gotten …
Three badges.
Devilfish, for being on the team that did the most damage to Luska the Giant Octopus.
Unyielding, for clearing 500K in debt.
Medic, for healing 250K of damage.
Lots of irony in that particular combo of badges.
A Giant Octopus. Too much frelling fun.
Did a bit more together after that, and ended up about a half-hour short of dinging 35. But that should come tonight … 🙂
Yep…still need to get the devil fish one, one of these days.
Yes…Last night with the Help of Kin, Shock, Syn and Hype got a lot of badges out of the way, and am one away from Vanguard…a controllers bestest buddy badge.
Also….with them I got my 4 damaage badge…1,000,000 point of damage…Taken…Adamant.
Been exchanging e-mails with a buddy who has dropped CoH in favor of WoW. One of the reasons for his leaving was that his main, a mind controller, was unable to solo enough for his liking (back in I3), and that it was an utterly nerfed AT.
So now comes containment, and the power has become quite the boss-killer. So my wife and I rolled up a mind/sonic troller couple, and have reached level 8 in short order while hardly ever taking any damage. I know things are going to get worse with them, especially as they can’t provide each other mez protection until level 22 (it could be 20, but stamina is just that necessary). And with me setting up the baddies, and she knocking them down, things are great.
My buddy doesn’t buy this. Says that it will eventually be nerfed, because, as WoW has taught him, the PvP element exposes overpowered builds very quickly, and hence, brings the nerfs on just as quickly.
I counter with, “But see, containment doesn’t reach critical mass until you start grouping controllers together, so that each single-target damage-dealer hits for twice the pain, rather than having to “waste” one for each target to set up the containment. An all-controller group requires organization, and is more likely to fly under the radar of the nerfbat, much like rad defenders/controllers have, a la Buffer Overrun.”
He doesn’t buy it, goes back to playing with his tiger mount in WoW. But I’m enjoying this pair. And the reason why I’m posting here is because these are our first toons on Champion server. If anybody wants to roll up some more ‘troller toons to join in on the goodness, or, of course, already has them, send me a tell on my global ID: @CurBludgeon.
Thanks for posting, CurB.
Mrs. Azure is a mind/sonic. We haven’t have much chance to play with her since I5 debuted, but that’s rather promising. Alas, her nerfed group holds will be a drawback for Mr. Azure’s martial artist, but I suspect we’ll figure out a way.
PB, re Vanguard … oh, my. I’ve not been much of a badge collector, but I see that there are some Accolades I need to start tracking down. Yes, yes, yes indeed …
Yes…thank Noelle for the info on Vanguard…and why Puck really wants it. 3 levels and the Rikti Crash site to go!
Now that I know where the stuff is to find in the crash site, I’m happy to help anyone find it and get the Vanguard. Especially Puck! (Who has dreams about fighting with Noelle. How very very odd.)
Noelle…
It was the only way I could explain you being hidden while on missions Sunday night and Monday…It was a dream.
No, I liked it. Really!
Better explanation than I could come up with.
Dave, As a bit of funny.
Syn, Hype and Puck needed 50% to 60% on the bar for lost leaders. So we went to one of the treanches in Terra Volta, and spent an hour going up and down it wiping out the mobs as they spawned.
The funny was that about 45 minutes into this…they stopped spawning…in the entire trench. I had never seen this before…and i was laughing as Syn and I were running after Hype waiting for a spawn. Nothing…nada…for 10 minutes. It was like the AI said “No mob for you!”.
Where’d your hat go?
“I’d just gotten off the plane from a trip to, um, Calgary, so I was in my business duds, not in the jacket and hat I’ve taken to wearing of late. As I was flying (personally) across IP, I slipped out of the jacket because it was a hot, muggy day … and the damn thing got whipped away by the wind and ended up down in the water. So … just my vest and shirt sleeves for that particular jaunt, since I didn’t visit my apartment before going out.”
Ok…fine. No wait…Syn-response: Whatever.
🙂
Interestingly, I got the Devilfish badge when I first stumbled across Luska. A mass of heroes was fighting it, and as i was about to ask if they needed my help (not knowing if it was okay to butt in), they downed it. I got the badge for hanging around for 30 seconds, not on a team, and never attacking.
The Vanguard accolade is very very useful. Hype’s already a contranker (two Mag-3 single-target holds + ice patch, to say nothing of being the Aggro Controller), and with Vangarde running…
Oy. So far I’ve got screen shots of all the Praetorians we’ve fought so far, locked in blocks of ice (including the crazy bitch Diabolique, so HA!) — plus the Crystal Titan (both fights), Jurassik, Psychic Clockwork King…
Weird thing? I couldn’t get a hold on piddly little Level 19 random-spawned-in-Boomtown Babbage, even with Mal also throwing stuff. Probably because he’s a “monster”, not an AV, and monsters are generally nigh-impossible to mez.
Where was I? Oh yeah, Vanguard = Good.
Syn’s only real mezz is the massive disorient that comes with the Psi-blast’s “nova”…
(Epic Defender’s) Power Buildup, Vanguard, Run in to the middle, Fulcrum Shift, Boom.
Everything that isn’t down is staggering around like a career drunk for almost a minute. It’s beautiful.
Interestingly, I got the Devilfish badge when I first stumbled across Luska.
A big reason why they changed the rules on how the Monster badges are awareded.
