Deep in the heart of RP

So I’ve done RP stuff on CoH before — usually just staying in character, or maybe applicant interviews, or occasional chit-chat centered around missions. But last night I actually dove/was dragged into a major RP thread.
Insidious.
I think I’ve kept away from a lot of serious RP in CoX because (a) a lot of the RP I see in CoX drips of melodrama and romance novel class writing, (b) I like to feel I’m getting my money’s worth from the game, not from a chat client, and (c) I tend to duo with Margie and, in fact, prefer to game with her, which limits my availability for such things.
There’s also the concern about imposing my plots on others, or vice-versa. I’ve seen that done, badly, too many times in my months on CoX.
That all said, it was fun. Psi-clone got yanked into Midnite Tempest‘s storyline, and it turned into something a lot more elaborate (in terms of how it intersects his own tale) than I’d anticipated. I have no idea the extent to which it will go beyond an hour or two of chat last night (and, to be honest, I’m not sure I want it to go much further (see a-c, above), but if I helped p.MT along with things in her story, I’m happy to have done so.
At the very least, it was kind of keen to be able to use the CoJ base as a backdrop (a couple of rooms worth, in fact).

  1. RP wise for me it depends on the people involved, and if I care about it enough to participate.
Some things I get drug into and really do hate them and do my best to extract myself from the Mire.
I saw that several folks got involved with the Midnite/Midnight plot. So I hope that everyone has a good time.

  2. I find that I have become more and more quiet on the coms. I’m not sure if it is correlated to my RL stress increasing and thus my desire to just smash things increasing or something else. Add that to my talking out loud to Dave while gaming and my general dislike of spontaneous written words (Being dyslexic writing has always been a bit painful and I am self conscious of my spelling ineptness. (Example: I copied this post into Word to spell check it before posting)) Hmm, maybe Doyce and I can convince more people to do the voice streaming thing.

  3. Voice Streaming?
I feel your pain Margie…but I tend to just keep charging onward.
That is one of the reasons I am such a slow typer in the game. I have to try and fix all the typo’s before hit enter. Not always successful…but there you go.

  4. I suggested Ventrilo for the CoJ months ago, and there was no interest. It now seems that Teamspeak may be better, but harder to configure. I have yet to use either for CoH, because of the lack of others knbown to be using them.

  5. Yes, but I’d just as soon not worry that someone is hearing me mutter, “Dammit, I wish X would hurry up so we can get this mish started,” or, “Son of a bitch, Y just aggroed the entire room, the idjit,” or, “I am so never teaming with Z again.”
Of course, as Margie points out, it’s convenient for me that I am able to maintain voice contact with my favorite player, regardless.
On a more serious note — it’s a lot easier (if slower) to maintain a character *voice* through the written word. Folks might get tired of my channeling a basso Velvet after a few minutes …

  6. For what it’s worth, Margie (I hope you don’t mind the familiarity…), I miss hearing you on coms. Your characters always have something witty, if not outright funny, to add to whatever conversation is going on. Don’t let a little thing like spelling correctly hold you back….it never has me 🙂

  7. Speaking of spelling, there’s something I’ve wanted to say to the Alliance at large for some time now. Maybe I should post something on the boards, along these lines:
Folks, there’s really no need to correct every little typo in chat. If you say “There’s an Arch Billain here,” we know you mean “Arch Villain.” Jumping into the chat with “*Villain” just unnecessarily adds to the chatter, increasing the rate at which conversations scroll out of the chat box. If you’re really concerned about your spelling, take a couple of seconds to proofread before you hit the Enter key. But, really, any typo that doesn’t substantially change the meaning of what you’re saying can probably be ignored. We’re bright enough to figure out what you meant.
What do you think? Is it worth posting something to that effect, or am I being neurotic again? (Not that the two are mutually exclusive…)
