Tempting

Character designs seem to hit me out of the blue. So it is with Father Frank, who I haven’t built on Champion yet (would need to drop someone), but on Triumph (my “pilot” server).
A priest, of course. “Old” face, grizzled hair. Used one of the martial arts robes (black) with the dress shirt (black, with a white tie) under it, almost looking like a collar. The effect works pretty well.
I’d be doing it up as a “tough but nice” priest sort of thing, so he’s a Defender with Empathy primary, natch. Secondary — Margie’s immediately thought of Mind Control (Psychic Blast, actually), but to me the answer for any good preacher would be Sonic.
I might actually roll him up on Champion as another soloist. I figure there’s always PUG space for an Empath, right? Though Margie notes the controversy on the Defender boards about how Controller secondaries are actually as strong as Defender primaries, which just doesn’t seem proper to me (and I say that as someone with a Controller with Empathy secondary).

  1. Gotta say:
I’ve seen amazing productivity out of controllers that defenders just can’t match.
Seriously, for team-helping, give me an Empath with a bunch of mezzes over an Empath with half-power ranged blasts any. day. of. the. week.
That said, the idea of a */Sonic preacher is funny.

  2. The only character idea to really stike me was my Mastermind, the Crimson Prophet. I was listening to a Lone Ranger radio show (circa 1942) that featured a con man using a “magic ring” (its colors changed with the humidity) to convince people of his powers that he might fleece them.
My Crimson Prophet is a former cult leader who was believed to be able to tell the future. He had his followers gather items of magical power, and used his new abilities to enrich himself.
Unfortunately, this attracted the attention of a certain Agent/Liberty Forcer, who smashed his gang and sent him to the Zig. He escaped (as you knew he would), and is now served by the most faithful of his flock, who follow him even from beyond the grave. Among his loyal servants are Derek, Marcus, Sean, and Reese.

  3. Yeah. I do have a fondness for Controllers — though, oddly enough, I only have one of them.
Reading the Defenders Issues list, I find that the Defender/Controller parity problem is only an issue in some power sets. Bubbles for one (gives Margie another sad look). Empathy for Defenders is/should be buffier than that for Controllers.
I dunno. Gotta think on this one. It’s possibly a fun character, but, then, so is the rest of my stable.
