(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/DnD\/comments\/8yhqwz\/5e_action_reference_cheatsheet\/\">Source<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>(See also my notes on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/2022\/09\/dd-5e-rules-action-economy.html\">Action Economy<\/a> about maximizing use of these elements.)<\/p>\n<h1>Actions<\/h1>\n<p><em>Actions<\/em> include (PHB 192) <em><a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/actionsinCombat.htm\">Attack, Cast a Spell, Dash, Disengage, Dodge, Help, Hide, Ready, Search, Use an Object<\/a><\/em>. Your class or a special feature may provide other <em>Actions<\/em>, and NPCs may have their own <em>Action<\/em> list as well.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to distinguish between an &#8220;attack&#8221; and the Attack <em>Action<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An &#8220;attack&#8221; is when you roll a D20 (usually) to try to hit someone. Attacks may be made in the Attack <em>Action<\/em>, but they can occur at other times.<\/li>\n<li>An Attack <em>Action<\/em> is one of your turn slots which may include one more more attacks in it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/single-combat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3003\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/single-combat-650x469.jpg\" alt=\"Combat\" width=\"650\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/single-combat-650x469.jpg 650w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/single-combat-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/single-combat-768x555.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/single-combat.jpg 950w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h1>Extra Attack vs. MultiAttack<\/h1>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/actionsinCombat.htm#:~:text=Certain%20features%2C%20such%20as%20the%20Extra%20Attack%20feature%20of%20the%20fighter%2C%20allow%20you%20to%20make%20more%20than%20one%20attack%20with%20this%20action.\">Extra Attack<\/a>&#8221; is something Fighters (etc.) get as a class advantage at various times. It means that when you take the Attack\u00a0<i>Action,<\/i>\u00a0you can do multiple attacks (e.g., instead of a single longsword blow on the orc, you take two, or even three).<\/p>\n<p>(This is different from doing <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/MakinganAttack.htm#:~:text=Two%2DWeapon%20Fighting,attack%20with%20it.\"><em>Two-Weapon Fighting<\/em><\/a> (PHB 195) where the second attack is a <em>Bonus Action<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Multiattack&#8221; is something NPCs (and a few shapeshifting PCs) do &#8212; an animal&#8217;s claw-claw-bite, for example. It is its own <i>Action, <\/i>a Multiattack <em>Action<\/em>,\u00a0not an Attack <em>Action<\/em>. \u00a0Each of those attacks is usually also available separately, which is important with <em>Opportunity Attacks<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That all sounds picky, but it means that if rules refer to an Attack Action, a Multiattack Action <em>does not count<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h1>Reactions,\u00a0Opportunity Attacks, and Readying<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/MakinganAttack.htm#:~:text=Opportunity%20Attacks,past%20an%20enemy.\">Opportunity Attack<\/a> (PHB 195) allows, as a <em>Reaction<\/em> (not during your turn, but during someone else&#8217;s), &#8220;one melee attack&#8221; when the target tries to step out of reach. <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/actionsinCombat.htm#:~:text=Certain%20features%2C%20such%20as%20the%20Extra%20Attack%20feature%20of%20the%20fighter%2C%20allow%20you%20to%20make%20more%20than%20one%20attack%20with%20this%20action.\">Extra Attack<\/a> doesn&#8217;t come into play (because it&#8217;s not giving you an Attack <em>Action<\/em>, just an attack): the Paladin doesn&#8217;t get to swing twice against a retreating foe, just once. Neither does Multiattack: when you move away from the giant bear, it can claw at you, but not claw-claw-bite.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/actionsinCombat.htm#:~:text=Ready,might%20be%20broken.\">Readying<\/a> lets you take a pre-specified <em>Reaction<\/em> (&#8220;if anyone steps in front of me, I will swing my sword at them&#8221;). You can only Ready a single attack, not an Extra Attack or a Multiattack, because Reactions don&#8217;t take place on your turn. E.g., the Monk (PHB 79) notes that the <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/classes\/monk.htm#:~:text=your%20monk%20level.-,Extra%20Attack,of%20once%2C%20whenever%20you%20take%20the%20Attack%20action%20on%20your%20turn.,-Stunning%20Strike\">Extra Attack<\/a> is only\u00a0<i>on their turn<\/i>. Ditto Fighter (PHB 72). Multiattacks are also intended only on the attacker&#8217;s turn.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/2024\/01\/dd-5e-rules-ready.html\">More on Readying an action here.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, you can only use a <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/theOrderofCombat.htm#:~:text=Bonus%20Actions,taking%20a%20bonus%20action.\"><em>Bonus Action<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">on your turn<\/span> (PHB 189). A two-weapon fighter can Ready an attack (or take an Opportunity Attack) with their rapier, but not their <em>Bonus Action<\/em> attack with a dagger.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #800000;\">So does this change in 5.5e?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4197\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo-208x300.png\" alt=\"dnd 5.5\/2024\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo-208x300.png 208w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo.png 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 208px) 85vw, 208px\" \/><\/a>Very little about this changes in 5.5e (2024), from an overall structure of rules. Rather than have spellcasting be part of <em>Attack,\u00a0<\/em>and using a magic item part of\u00a0<em>Use an Object, <\/em>they have been separated.\u00a0 This should allow for better refinement and definition of when what can (or cannot) be done, and differentiation between using spellcasting and sword-swinging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">There is now a specific\u00a0<strong><em>Influence<\/em><\/strong> Action for CHArisma-based actions (and WISdom <em>(Animal Handling)<\/em>.\u00a0 The point here is to clarify that these are Actions that take a turn (an Action), not things that &#8212; maybe? &#8212; you can do while also\u00a0 swinging your sword around.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Use an Object<\/em> is now <em><strong>Utilize<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>and, as with the above, it is defined strictly for non-magical objects. At the same time, using\u00a0<em>Utilize\u00a0<\/em>with special tool kits (e.g., Thieves&#8217; Tools) is much better defined; each tool kit has a <em>Utilize<\/em> action or two. That means that the previously poorly defined <em>Pick Locks<\/em> and <em>Disarm Traps<\/em> are clearer in what happens and how (specifically using\u00a0<em>Sleight of Hand<\/em> and Thieves&#8217; Tools against a DC 15).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><em>Search<\/em><\/strong> used to include both WISdom rolls (e.g., <em>Perception<\/em>) and INTelligence rolls (e.g., <em>Investigation<\/em>). This has now been broken out between <em>Search<\/em> (WISdom) and <strong><em>Study<\/em><\/strong> (INTelligence).\u00a0 We&#8217;ll cover that distinction more in <a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/2024\/01\/dd-5e-rules-perception-and-investigation-and-passive-perception.html\">the appropriate entry<\/a>.
