The trick to understanding it is that you only get\u00a0<em>Bonus Actions<\/em> that the rules specifically say you get.\u00a0Certain rules give you a <em>Bonus Action<\/em>. You can only ever use\u00a0<b>one <em>Bonus Action<\/em> on your turn<\/b>, and it can only be on your turn (you can&#8217;t use a <em>Bonus Action<\/em> in an Opportunity Attack, for example).<\/p>\n<p>If you aren&#8217;t using or eligible by the rules for a Bonus Action, <i>you don&#8217;t get one<\/i>. There isn&#8217;t a &#8220;Bonus Action phase&#8221; in the turn or something. What you can do as a (single) <em>Bonus Action<\/em>\u00a0<b>has to come from a rule or ability applicable to your character<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Note that some spells have their <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/spellcasting\/castingASpell.htm#:~:text=time%20to%20cast.-,Bonus%20Action,except%20for%20a%20cantrip%20with%20a%20casting%20time%20of%201%20action.,-Reactions\">casting time as one\u00a0<em>Bonus Action<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em> These spells can\u00a0<em>only<\/em> be used as a BA. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teepublic.com\/t-shirt\/12399527-bonus-action-to-cry-style-1\">Source<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h1>An Example<\/h1>\n<p>So, for example, my Rogue, Tener, started off with only one thing I could do as a <em>Bonus Action<\/em> (the one available to everyone): a second melee attack using <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/MakinganAttack.htm#:~:text=Two%2DWeapon%20Fighting,attack%20with%20it.\">Two-Weapon Fighting<\/a> (PHB 195).<\/p>\n<p>At second level Rogue, he got the class ability <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/classes\/rogue.htm#:~:text=on%20the%20run.-,Cunning%20Action,be%20used%20only%20to%20take%20the%20Dash%2C%20Disengage%2C%20or%20Hide%20action.,-Roguish%20Archetype\"><em>Cunning Action<\/em><\/a> (PHB 96), which meant I could use my <em>Bonus Action<\/em> to <em>Dash, Disengage,<\/em> or <em>Hide<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>At third level Rogue, he got the Thief archetype ability of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/classes\/rogue.htm#:~:text=Fast%20Hands,an%20Object%20action.\">Fast Hands<\/a><\/em> (PHB 97), which meant I could use my <em>Bonus Action<\/em> for <em>Sleight-of-Hand<\/em>, disarm a trap, unlock a lock, or <em>Use an Object<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But I couldn&#8217;t use my <em>Bonus Action<\/em> to, say, <em>Help<\/em>, because that wasn&#8217;t a Bonus Action defined for my character. I could only do those specific actions defined for my Bonus Action in my rules.<\/p>\n<h1>Does everyone have Bonus Actions?<\/h1>\n<p>Some characters don&#8217;t have any <em>Bonus Actions, <\/em>at least at lower levels (except the option of Two-Weapon Fighting, if they choose it).<\/p>\n<h1>When can I take a Bonus Action?<\/h1>\n<p>One more thing about Bonus Actions: some have\u00a0<b>prerequisites\u00a0<\/b>and some have none. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Cunning Action<\/em> <\/strong>has no prerequisites. Whatever else I do on my turn, whenever I want in my turn, I can use the <em>Bonus Action<\/em> to, for example, Dash.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/MakinganAttack.htm#:~:text=Two%2DWeapon%20Fighting,attack%20with%20it.\"><strong>Two-Weapon Fighting<\/strong><\/a> says <em>&#8220;When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you&#8217;re holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you&#8217;re holding in the other hand.&#8221;<\/em> Therefore, you need to, in sequence:<br \/>\n(1) take an <em>Attack<\/em> action with one hand; then, later in your turn, you can<br \/>\n(2) use the <em>Bonus Action<\/em> to attack with the other hand.<br \/>\nYou can do any other allowable things in between &#8212; chat with someone, Move, etc.\u00a0 But you can&#8217;t use the <em>Bonus Action<\/em> first in this case.<\/li>\n<li>Monk&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/classes\/monk.htm#:~:text=your%20Wisdom%20modifier-,Flurry%20of%20Blows,ki%20point%20to%20make%20two%20unarmed%20strikes%20as%20a%20bonus%20action.,-Patient%20Defense\"><em>Flurry of Blows<\/em><\/a><\/strong> speficies <em>&#8220;Immediately after you take the Attack action on your turn &#8230;&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0In order to use the FoB <em>Bonus Action<\/em>, you have to<br \/>\n(1) take an <em>Attack<\/em> action, and then immediately (no Moving in-between)<br \/>\n(2) use the FoB <em>Bonus Action<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In short, <a href=\"https:\/\/rpg.stackexchange.com\/questions\/131317\/can-you-make-a-bonus-action-attack-from-two-weapon-fighting-before-you-take-your?noredirect=1&amp;lq=1\">if there is a prerequisite, it must be fulfilled first<\/a>. If the Bonus Action says &#8220;when you do X, you can do Y,&#8221; you can&#8217;t do Y, then X.<\/p>\n<h1>In summary &#8230;<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>The only time you get a <em>Bonus Action<\/em> is if you have a rule (usually from a class, race, or feat) that\u00a0<i>says\u00a0<\/i>you have a <em>Bonus Action<\/em>, and then it&#8217;s only good for what the rule\u00a0<i>says\u00a0<\/i>you can do with it. (And you can only do a single BA on your turn.)<\/li>\n<li>Everyone has a <em>Bonus Action<\/em> for Two-Handed Fighting (allowing you to do the second attack as a <em>Bonus Action<\/em>). That&#8217;s pretty much it.<\/li>\n<li>As a Rogue, your <em>Cunning Action<\/em> allows you to take a <em>Bonus Action<\/em>, but only to do a Dash, Disengage, or Hide. (This is a &#8220;restriction,&#8221; yes, but it&#8217;s actually\u00a0<i>granting<\/i> you Bonus Actions that nobody else necessarily has. Similarly, if you take Thief, at 3rd level you can do a <em>Sleight of Hand<\/em>, disarm\/unlock, or <em>Use an Object<\/em> as your <em>Bonus Action<\/em> on a turn.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Can I take a Bonus Action to <em>Help<\/em> someone?<\/h1>\n<p>This came up early in my campaign. In short, unless you have a <em>Bonus Action<\/em> that <i>specifically\u00a0<\/i>says you can <em>Help<\/em> on your BA, you can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>That said, <em>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/actionsinCombat.htm#:~:text=Help,made%20with%20advantage.\">Help<\/a>&#8220;<\/em> (PHB 192) is a great <em>Action<\/em> for a character to take on their turn when they&#8217;re not sure what to do or if they don&#8217;t think their own attack on the BBEG will be effective, or if someone else will have a great attack.<\/p>\n<p>For Rogues (again as it came up in my campaign) it doesn&#8217;t really come into play for allowing a <em>Sneak Attack,<\/em> though, because to <em>Help<\/em> for combat (giving\u00a0 Advantage) the Helper has to be adjacent to the target &#8212; which, if they are, means a Rogue can already <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/classes\/rogue.htm#:~:text=gain%20this%20benefit.-,Sneak%20Attack,as%20shown%20in%20the%20Sneak%20Attack%20column%20of%20the%20Rogue%20table.,-Thieves%27%20Cant\"><em>Sneak Attack<\/em><\/a> the target anyway (PHB 96) (though a <em>Help<\/em> would let you roll Advantage on the attack, which is not for nothing).<\/p>\n<p>But, again, Help can&#8217;t be done in a <em>Bonus Action<\/em> unless someone has that specifically as something they can do as a BA.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #800000;\">So does any of this change in 5.5e?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4197\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo-208x300.png\" alt=\"dnd 5.5\/2024\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo-208x300.png 208w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo.png 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 208px) 85vw, 208px\" \/><\/a>Basically?\u00a0 No, not really.\u00a0 Bonus Actions <em>per se<\/em> work the same way in 5.5e (2024). Various skills and talents and spells and class features have been shifted into (or out of) being a Bonus Action.\u00a0 The key here is not to assume anything &#8212; look it up before you take it for your new 5.5e character.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For example: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Druids can now all <em>Wild Shape<\/em> as a Bonus Action (previously only Circle of the Moon Druids could). <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Paladins&#8217;\u00a0<em>Lay On Hands<\/em> is now a Bonus Action feature, not an Action one.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Drinking (or administering) a <em>Potion of Healing<\/em> is now a Bonus Action, not an Action.
