But it&#8217;s important for players to know about the rules, too, especially as they&#8217;ve changed since editions gone by.<\/p>\n<h1>Death (and Unconsciousness)<\/h1>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to understand a bit how down-and-out damage works in 5e. There&#8217;s no such thing as &#8220;going negative&#8221; here. When you <strong>drop to 0 HP<\/strong> (the bottom, you can&#8217;t go lower), you fall <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/conditionSummary.htm#:~:text=Unconscious,of%20the%20creature.\"><em>Unconscious<\/em><\/a> (PHB 292): you&#8217;re <em><a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/conditionSummary.htm#:~:text=the%20thunderwave%20spell.-,Incapacitated,An%20incapacitated%20creature%20can%E2%80%99t%20take%20actions%20or%20reactions.,-Invisible\">Incapacitated<\/a><\/em>, can&#8217;t move, can&#8217;t speak, are unaware, drop anything being carried, fail all Strength and Dexterity Saves &#8230; and Attacks against you have Advantage, and any hit is considered a Crit if attacked from 5 feet away.<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s the least worry you have. Because one of two things happen:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If the damage was <strong>so massive<\/strong> that the extra damage (theoretically beyond 0) <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/damageAndHealing.htm#:~:text=Instant%20Death,the%20cleric%20dies.\">equals or exceeds your HP maximum<\/a>, you are dead, dead, dead.<\/li>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3076\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3076\" style=\"width: 175px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/death-spear-hourglass.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3076\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/death-spear-hourglass-175x300.jpg\" alt=\"death spear hourglass\" width=\"175\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/death-spear-hourglass-175x300.jpg 175w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/death-spear-hourglass-379x650.jpg 379w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/death-spear-hourglass.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 85vw, 175px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3076\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tick-tock &#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If not, then you are &#8220;just&#8221; bleeding out, and need to start making <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/damageAndHealing.htm#:~:text=Death%20Saving%20Throws,suffer%20instant%20death.\">Death Saves<\/a> each turn (PHB 197). If you start a turn at 0 HP and are not yet stabilized, roll 1d20.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On 10+, you <strong>succeed. <\/strong>Three total success, you become stable and will live.<\/li>\n<li>On 1-9, you <strong>fail<\/strong> (a nat 1 counts as two fails). Three total fails, you are dead, dead, dead.<\/li>\n<li>On a nat 20, you immediately gain back 1 HP and can regain consciousness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If someone <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/damageAndHealing.htm#:~:text=You%20can%20use%20your%20action%20to%20administer%20first%20aid%20to%20an%20unconscious%20creature%20and%20attempt%20to%20stabilize%20it%2C%20which%20requires%20a%20successful%20DC%2010%20Wisdom%20(Medicine)%20check.\">intervenes with a DC 10 <em>Wisdom (Medicine)<\/em> check<\/a>, it will stabilize you, ending the Death Save checks.<\/p>\n<p>Note that if someone <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/damageAndHealing.htm#:~:text=Damage%20at%200%20Hit%20Points.%20If%20you%20take%20any%20damage%20while%20you%20have%200%20hit%20points%2C%20you%20suffer%20a%20death%20saving%20throw%20failure.%20If%20the%20damage%20is%20from%20a%20critical%20hit%2C%20you%20suffer%20two%20failures%20instead.\">inflicts <u>further<\/u> damage on you while unconscious<\/a>, it counts as a Death Save <strong>failure<\/strong>; a crit (which is the auto-result of a hit from within 5&#8242;) counts as two fails. This also restarts the Death Save process. And if you take damage at 0 that is equal or greater than your normal number of HP, you die.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3080\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3080\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/memento-mori-death-art-the-death.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3080\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/memento-mori-death-art-the-death-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"Memento Mori\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/memento-mori-death-art-the-death-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/memento-mori-death-art-the-death.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3080\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s only a flesh wound!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/damageAndHealing.htm#:~:text=A%20stable%20creature%20that%20isn%E2%80%99t%20healed%20regains%201%20hit%20point%20after%201d4%20hours.\">stable creature<\/a> stays at 0, <em>Unconscious<\/em>. It will heal 1 hp (and regain consciousness) in 1d4 hours (this does\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> count as a Short Rest). Healing spells are, of course, welcome to accelerate this process.<\/p>\n<p>Note that <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/damageAndHealing.htm#:~:text=Monsters%20and%20Death,as%20player%20characters.\">this technically happens to the bad guys as well<\/a>; the presumption, though, is hitting 0 kills a bad guy (they either fail their Death Saves, or you go around slitting throats after the battle). Best not to dwell on it.\u00a0 Powerful \/ significant enemies might get a Death Save process.<\/p>\n<h5>Taking Advantage on Death Saves<\/h5>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3079\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3079\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/The-Peddler-Hans-Holbein-the-Younger-Dance.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3079\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/The-Peddler-Hans-Holbein-the-Younger-Dance-300x225.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/The-Peddler-Hans-Holbein-the-Younger-Dance-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/The-Peddler-Hans-Holbein-the-Younger-Dance.webp 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3079\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Wait, I need to roll an additional D20 on this!&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It seems clear that <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/inspiration.htm#:~:text=for%20later%20use.-,Using%20Inspiration,ability%20check.%20Spending%20your%20inspiration%20gives%20you%20advantage%20on%20that%20roll.,-Additionally%2C%20if%20you\">you can use Inspiration to gain Advantage on a Death Save<\/a> (as it is, in fact, a saving throw, just not one associated with any Ability).<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, as people can gift each other with their Inspiration, other folk could feed their Inspiration to a dying party member (&#8220;Don&#8217;t you die on me, man! Don&#8217;t you die on me!&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>As far as that goes, anything that helps on saving throws helps on a Death Save. So a <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/spells\/bless.htm#:~:text=roll%20or%20a-,saving%20throw,-before%20the%20spell\"><em>Bless<\/em><\/a> spell would work, too.<\/p>\n<h2>Knocking someone unconscious<\/h2>\n<p>Whether you want to avoid being a murder-hobo, or want to interrogate a prisoner who won&#8217;t surrender, you can intentionally <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/damageAndHealing.htm#:~:text=Knocking%20a%20Creature,and%20is%20stable.\">knock someone out<\/a> instead of death on opponents. Hard.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You simply declare, on <strong>any melee (martial or spell) attack<\/strong> that would have killed someone, that you are instead knocking them <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/conditionSummary.htm#:~:text=Unconscious,of%20the%20creature.\"><em>Unconscious<\/em><\/a> (PHP 292)\u00a0<i>at the moment when the DM would say they&#8217;re dead<\/i>. You don&#8217;t have to proclaim &#8220;subduing&#8221; damage in advance or anything; beating someone into unconsciousness is very much the same as beating them to death: it&#8217;s all in what you do after they fall down.<\/p>\n<p>A foe rendered <em>Unconscious<\/em> this way is considered <a href=\"https:\/\/5e.d20srd.org\/srd\/combat\/damageAndHealing.htm#:~:text=A%20stable%20creature%20that%20isn%E2%80%99t%20healed%20regains%201%20hit%20point%20after%201d4%20hours.\">stable<\/a>. They will wake up (regaining 1 hp) in 1d4 hours. You can leave them behind, bind them and leave them behind, or change your mind and gack them. If you want to interrogate them, then you either need to wait, or use some healing magic on them.<\/p>\n<h2>Raising the Dead<\/h2>\n<p>There are a variety of spells that can bring back dead folk.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rpg.stackexchange.com\/questions\/120082\/what-spells-are-available-to-resurrect-characters\">There&#8217;s a good article here on it<\/a>. In summary:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"lightly\" href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/files.d20.io\/images\/195468297\/lU1S7PFIVwa-CXIViCgQNw\/original.png?1611520216\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/files.d20.io\/images\/195468297\/lU1S7PFIVwa-CXIViCgQNw\/med.png?1611520216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Time Limit is how long after death the spell can be used. Stolen souls, headless bodies, lack of bodies, death by fire, being turned undead, can all block some of these spells. Missing body parts can be an issue. Finding a 500gp diamond might not be easy, either. And many of these spells have consequences &#8212; limits on what they can restore (see article), being Necromantic in nature (ew), or the services that will be requested in return. (And clerical spells, esp. high level ones, have to be cast to a purpose sanctioned by the deity involved.)<\/p>\n<p>Which isn&#8217;t to say it can&#8217;t happen, but don&#8217;t think of all this as the wild and wooly AD&amp;D days when raising up dead PCs garnered as little consideration as murder-hoboing a complex (if wholly illogical) underground ecosystem.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #800000;\">So does any of this change under 5.5e?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4197\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo-208x300.png\" alt=\"dnd 5.5\/2024\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo-208x300.png 208w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo.png 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 208px) 85vw, 208px\" \/><\/a>The basic progression of 0 HP &#8211;&gt; Death Saves and how all that works is mostly <a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dndbeyond.com\/sources\/dnd\/br-2024\/playing-the-game#DeathSavingThrows\">the same<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">There are minor changes in death-undoing spells.\u00a0 <em>Reincarnate<\/em> incorporates the updated species options in the PHB. <em>Resurrection<\/em> no longer cures non-magical diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Death comes for us all.
