Note that it&#8217;s still considered Difficult terrain (double cost), and if you continue on past their reach they will get an Opportunity Attack. So Halflings can duck past an Ogre this way, while Humans could dodge around a Fire Giant&#8217;s legs.<\/p>\n<p>(See also:<a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/2024\/01\/dd-5e-rules-moving-through-a-hostile-creatures-space.html\"> D&amp;D 5e Rules \u2013 Moving Through a Hostile Creature\u2019s Space! \u2013 Blog of Heroes<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Note also that some creatures (typically those larger than Medium) may have physical melee attack reach of more than the normal five feet.<\/p>\n<h1>Surrounded!<\/h1>\n<p>Spaces taken by creatures cannot overlap. That means, for example, if you as a Medium humanoid are surrounded by enemies,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/roll20.net\/compendium\/dnd5e\/Rules:Movement%20and%20Position?order=5#toc_9\">how many enemies that is depends on their size<\/a>. You could be surrounded by eight Medium enemies, but only four Large enemies could surround you.\u00a0 Similarly while you and your Medium friends could surround a Medium Orc with only eight of you, that Large Ogre would need to be surrounded by twelve Medium opponents.<\/p>\n<h1>Grappling and Shoving<\/h1>\n<p>You only grapple something\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/roll20.net\/compendium\/dnd5e\/Rules:Making%20an%20Attack?order=5#toc_11\">no more than 1 size <em>larger<\/em> than you<\/a>. When grappling, your speed is halved unless the grappled creature is 2+ sizes <em>smaller<\/em> than you.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, as a Medium Human, you could grapple an Ogre, but not a Treant.\u00a0 Similarly, an Ogre could grapple a Halfling <em>and<\/em> move off with them at full speed.<\/p>\n<p>You can also only try to Shove something\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/roll20.net\/compendium\/dnd5e\/Rules:Making%20an%20Attack?order=5#toc_12\">no more than 1 size <em>larger<\/em> than you<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1>Getting Small<\/h1>\n<p>A creature can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/roll20.net\/compendium\/dnd5e\/Rules:Movement%20and%20Position?order=5#toc_10\">squeeze into a space<\/a>\u00a0one size category <em>smaller<\/em>.\u00a0 So a Large creature could squeeze through a 5 ft square opening or 5 ft wide corridor.<\/p>\n<p>When doing so, it counts as Difficult terrain (double movement cost), and the squeezing-through creature has Disadvantage for attacks and Dex saving throws, and attackers have Advantage on attacking them.<\/p>\n<h1>What Else Does Size Do?<\/h1>\n<p>Not a whole heck of a lot. In 3.5e, small creatures got an AC boost, larger creatures an AC deficit, but this no longer exists in 5e.<\/p>\n<p>Size does have an impact on the Encumbrance load that can be carried, but I try to avoid Encumbrance rules.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How about with 5.5e?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4197\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo-208x300.png\" alt=\"dnd 5.5\/2024\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo-208x300.png 208w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo.png 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 208px) 85vw, 208px\" \/><\/a>Not a lot of differences here.\u00a0 The lovely size comparison drawings are lost, alas, though <a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dndbeyond.com\/sources\/dnd\/br-2024\/playing-the-game#CreatureSize\">the table of what sizes mean<\/a> still remains. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Movement<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">There is a <a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dndbeyond.com\/sources\/dnd\/br-2024\/playing-the-game#MovementandPosition:~:text=A%20creature%E2%80%99s%20space%20is%20the%20area%20that%20it%20effectively%20controls%20in%20combat%20and%20the%20area%20it%20needs%20to%20fight%20effectively.\">note<\/a> that &#8220;A creature&#8217;s space is the area that it effectively controls in combat and the area it needs to fight effectively,&#8221; which is useful clarification.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Cover<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The squares with the diagrams are also missing on 5.5e (which seems to not like visual rules).\u00a0 Instead, we have <a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dndbeyond.com\/sources\/dnd\/br-2024\/playing-the-game#Cover\">a table<\/a> to define it:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Half<\/strong> &#8211; Offered by another creature or an object that covers at least half of the target.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Three-Quarters<\/strong> &#8211; Offered by an object that covers at least three-quarters of the target.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">One could argue that&#8217;s the same as obscuring 1-2 (half) of the square corners of the target, or 3 (three-quarters_ of the corners, but it&#8217;s still a bit loosey-goosier. (I will probably continue to use the corners picture).<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Grappling and shoving<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Grappling remains only possible if the target is <a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dndbeyond.com\/sources\/dnd\/br-2024\/rules-glossary#UnarmedStrike:~:text=This%20grapple%20is%20possible%20only%20if%20the%20target%20is%20no%20more%20than%20one%20size%20larger%20than%20you%20and%20if%20you%20have%20a%20hand%20free%20to%20grab%20it.\">no more than one size larger<\/a> than the grappler. The same is true for <a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dndbeyond.com\/sources\/dnd\/br-2024\/rules-glossary#UnarmedStrike:~:text=This%20shove%20is%20possible%20only%20if%20the%20target%20is%20no%20more%20than%20one%20size%20larger%20than%20you.\">Shoving<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Getting Small<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">While moving through a space &#8220;sized for a creature one size smaller than you&#8221; remains Difficult Terrain, there is no mention made of combat Advantage or Disadvantage around it.\u00a0 This might be because the rule was moved into the Glossary for &#8220;<a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dndbeyond.com\/sources\/dnd\/br-2024\/rules-glossary#DifficultTerrain:~:text=A%20narrow%20opening%20sized%20for%20a%20creature%20one%20size%20smaller%20than%20you\">Difficult Terrain<\/a>,&#8221; but it seems an odd change. It\u00a0<em>might<\/em> be implied by Size language around <a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dndbeyond.com\/sources\/dnd\/br-2024\/playing-the-game#CreatureSize:~:text=A%20creature%E2%80%99s%20space%20is%20the%20area%20that%20it%20effectively%20controls%20in%20combat%20and%20the%20area%20it%20needs%20to%20fight%20effectively.\">the space needed to combat effectively<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Size matters!
