It does make a godawful racket (carrying 300 feet away, which any DM should take advantage of), but it also scales damage by spell slot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/LI8MDp8.gif\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Overall, a nifty spell. But we&#8217;re not going to talk about any of that.<\/p>\n<h1><em>Thunderwave<\/em> and its Area of Effect<\/h1>\n<p>This came up in a game, so afterwards I did some looking into the odd Area of Effect world that is Cubes and <em>Thunderwave<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>(There&#8217;s a lot about 5e that I respect, but their AoE stuff is kind of janky in general and then the fit onto a grid map &#8212; which 5e really sort of dislikes on principle but cannot ignore because a lot of tables really love it, like ours &#8212; is even <em>more<\/em> janky.)<\/p>\n<p><em>Thunderwave<\/em>\u00a0 has <i>Range: Self (15-foot cube).<\/i>\u00a0<i>&#8220;A wave of thunderous force\u00a0<b>sweeps out from you<\/b>. Each creature in\u00a0<b>a 15-foot cube originating from you<\/b>\u00a0&#8230;&#8221;<\/i>\u00a0blah blah effects.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does that mean? How does the <em>cube<\/em> relate to the <em>caster?<\/em> \u00a0You would think a Cube AoE would be easy. Yet some of the writing on it approaches being Talmudic in its intricacies to figure out what RAW means here. This is my current interpretation:<\/p>\n<h1>Putting together the Self and the Cube AoE<\/h1>\n<h2>Range of Self<\/h2>\n<p>AoE spells that have a range of <em>Self<\/em> have <a href=\"https:\/\/5thsrd.org\/spellcasting\/casting_a_spell\/#:~:text=Spells%20that%20create%20cones%20or%20lines%20of%20effect%20that%20originate%20from%20you%20also%20have%20a%20range%20of%20self%2C%20indicating%20that%20the%20origin%20point%20of%20the%20spell%27s%20effect%20must%20be%20you.\">a point of origin starting from the caster<\/a> (PHB 202).<\/p>\n<h2>Cube AoE<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the PHB 204 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dndbeyond.com\/sources\/basic-rules\/spellcasting#:~:text=otherwise-,Cube,unless%20you%20decide%20otherwise,-Cylinder\">Cube AoE<\/a>\u00a0(emphasis mine):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You select a cube&#8217;s point of origin, which lies\u00a0<b>anywhere on a face of the cubic effect<\/b>. The cube&#8217;s size is expressed as the length of each side.<\/p>\n<p>A <b>cube&#8217;s point of origin<\/b>\u00a0is not included in the cube&#8217;s area of effect, unless you decide otherwise.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>AoE and Grid Maps<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rpg.stackexchange.com\/a\/103855\/67995\">DMG 251<\/a> notes the following on &#8220;Areas of Effect&#8221; in relation to grid maps:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The area of effect of a spell, monster ability, or other feature must be translated onto squares or hexes to determine which potential targets are in the area and which aren&#8217;t. Choose\u00a0<b>an intersection of squares<\/b>\u00a0or hexes as the\u00a0<b>point of origin<\/b>\u00a0of an area of effect, then follow its rules as normal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/rpg.stackexchange.com\/a\/144291\/67995\">Xanathar&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0echoes this, speaking of &#8220;Area of Effect on a Grid&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Choose an\u00a0<b>intersection of squares as the point of origin\u00a0<\/b>of an area of effect, then follow the rules for that kind of area as normal (see the \u201cAreas of Effect\u201d section in chapter 10 of the Player\u2019s Handbook).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is one that drives me bats as DM, because everyone wants their spell to be centered in in the center of a square (in origin, in target, in range calculations), and the rule are\u00a0<em>very<\/em> clear that is not the case: for where spells start from, land (if not targeting a creature), and calculating the range,\u00a0<em><strong>it&#8217;s all about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">intersections<\/span><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(If you look at <a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/2022\/10\/dd-5e-rules-cover.html\">how Cover works on a grid<\/a>, too, it&#8217;s much the same thing.)<\/p>\n<h2>Put it all together &#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>So, standing in a 5&#215;5 grid square, any of the four corners of the square \/ <strong>intersections<\/strong> of the grid are at a <strong>range of &#8220;self&#8221;<\/strong> and are corners that could be the <strong>face of the cube<\/strong> you are going to create (including a cube that you are part of, if you are touching the outside face from the inside). Here then would be the possible arrangements I can see:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3997\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3997\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Cube-AoE-for-Thunderwave.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3997\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Cube-AoE-for-Thunderwave-650x522.png\" alt=\"Cube AoE for Thunderwave\" width=\"650\" height=\"522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Cube-AoE-for-Thunderwave-650x522.png 650w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Cube-AoE-for-Thunderwave-300x241.png 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Cube-AoE-for-Thunderwave-768x617.png 768w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Cube-AoE-for-Thunderwave.png 795w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3997\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cube AoE arrangements<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Any of the above can be rotated in increments of 90 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>I.e., you can be on any of the squares outside of the cube, or on the inner squares of the cube, wherever one of the corners of your square touches (red blips) part of the perimeter (side) of the cube. But\u00a0<i>not in the very center,\u00a0<\/i>because you can&#8217;t reach that outer face from there.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve not seen anyone actually include the bottom left &#8220;<strong>corner<\/strong>&#8221; example, but it seems to fit the rules to my eyes.<\/p>\n<h2>Insider Casting<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">There is some debate as whether being on the <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">inside of the cube<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"> (bottom right-hand two examples) is allowed. I don&#8217;t read anything in the above, though, that says it isn&#8217;t. That might mean including yourself in the spell effect (but hold that thought for a moment).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Note that though you can be within the cube, for the\u00a0<em>Thunderwave<\/em> spell, <i>&#8220;the thunderous force sweeps\u00a0<b>out from you<\/b>,&#8221;<\/i>\u00a0so you yourself are not affected when you cast it, even if you are in the area. (Which is a fancier way of saying that <a href=\"https:\/\/rpg.stackexchange.com\/questions\/144271\/can-i-cast-thunderwave-and-be-at-the-center-of-its-bottom-face-but-not-be-affec\/147590#147590\">you, as the point of origin, are not affected by spells that have a point of origin<\/a>; a point is not dimensionless, in this case.)<\/p>\n<p><em>(But Dave,<\/em> you might be saying, <em>if the point of origin is the grid intersection you are casting from, then doesn&#8217;t the thunderous force emanate from that and, if you are inside the AoE, affect you, too? <\/em>To which I say (1) remember how I said some of this stuff gets Talmudic? and (2) go away, boy, you bother me.)<\/p>\n<p>When would you use a case, of being inside (not the center!) of the cube? Two use cases I can think of:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To reduce the effective effective range to 10 feet rather than 15 feet (potentially important in an indoor combat).<\/li>\n<li>To include a tiny opponent in your own square (an edge case, but a potentially helpful one).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h1>To sum up<\/h1>\n<p>So, unless anyone has any objections, that&#8217;s how I consider the area for <em>Thunderwave<\/em> to work.<\/p>\n<h1><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4197\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo.png\" alt=\"dnd 5.5\/2024\" width=\"215\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo.png 215w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/dnd-55-2024-logo-208x300.png 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 85vw, 215px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #800000;\">So what about with 5.5e?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">I&#8217;m still trying to figure that out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Remember that in 5e (2014), grid-based combat is an\u00a0<em>optional<\/em> rule. The default is Theater of the Mind, where the DM gets to be constantly juggling where everything and everyone is in order to convey it to the players so that they have some idea of what&#8217;s going on &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Sorry. Betraying my wargaming prejudices here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Grid-based tactical maps are referenced in the <a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dndbeyond.com\/sources\/dnd\/br-2024\/the-basics#BattleGridandMiniatures\">5.5e (2024) PHB<\/a>, but, in more detail, in the 5.5e DMG, p. 44. These largely parallel the 5e rules (along with the confusing &#8220;well, here&#8217;s what you can do with these things, but you don&#8217;t have to, you can just use rulers and pipe cleaners and sticky notes,&#8221; but I digress).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The key here is that under &#8220;Areas of Effect,&#8221; the DMG rules say:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">If the area has a point of origin, choose an <strong>intersection of squares<\/strong> or hexes to be the point of origin, then follow its rules as normal.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">As well as:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">If an area of effect covers at least half a square or hex, the entire square or hex is affected.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">This is basically the same as the 5e rules. Whether a line, a cube, a sphere, or a cone, <strong>everything anchors off a grid intersection<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Except &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Emanations<\/strong> are weird. In 5e, these were basically &#8220;range = Self&#8221; radiused AoEs, but it was still easy enough to say, &#8220;Well, sure, choose one of the four intersections [assuming a square grid] around your character and anchor the effect there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">But while <a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dndbeyond.com\/sources\/dnd\/br-2024\/spells#Range\">5.5e has &#8220;range = Self&#8221; rules<\/a>, a lot of those lean on <a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dndbeyond.com\/sources\/dnd\/br-2024\/rules-glossary#EmanationAreaofEffect\">Emanations<\/a>, which make corner-based AoEs a bit harder to swallow:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-content-chunk-id=\"a341ac92-c60c-4af9-9c41-0d90e30adbf9\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">An Emanation is an\u00a0area of effect that extends in straight lines from a creature or an object in all directions. The effect that creates an Emanation specifies the distance it extends. [&#8230;]<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-content-chunk-id=\"29b25b02-85ed-48e1-b941-51b75989e7fa\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">An Emanation\u2019s origin (creature or object) isn\u2019t included in the area of effect unless its creator decides otherwise.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">That\u00a0<em>really<\/em> sounds like they want an Emanation AoE to center on the focal square, not on an intersection next to it. Given the AoE definition above, that sounds incorrect, but it&#8217;s still an uncomfortable definition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">That said, I&#8217;d still require an Emanation to hook off of one of the target&#8217;s adjoining intersections, and treat it different from a sphere AoE, etc., by being mobile with the creature or object it emanates from. That keeps things consistent, if marginally janky.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">But what about <em>Thunderwave?<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Well, what about it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Oh, as a spell?
