Which turned out to be the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sands of Broken Bonds<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmbinder.com\/share\/-MUtwIO52sItq0CWEluC#:~:text=A%20metal%20can%20that%20has%20no%20opening%20but%20sounds%20as%20if%20it%20is%20filled%20with%20liquid%2C%20sand%2C%20spiders%2C%20or%20broken%20glass%20(your%20choice)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trinket<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nala was carrying as a\u00a0 good luck charm. They negotiated an exchange, the can containing the Sands for Xharva reanimating the petrified form of Aldrik.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Aldrik <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">didn&#8217;t speak much of his experience, except that he&#8217;d seen some sort of conflict between the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crushing Wave<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cult and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Earth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cult, and had been petrified by the medusa, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marlos Urnrayle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nala <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recalled that she had been given a letter for Aldrik in Red Larch, but didn&#8217;t give it to him.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_4159\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4159\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/logo-eternal-flame.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4159\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/logo-eternal-flame-150x150.png\" alt=\"logo eternal flame\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/logo-eternal-flame-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/logo-eternal-flame-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/logo-eternal-flame.png 256w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 85vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Eternal Flame<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a short rest, and <strong>Aldrik<\/strong> nicking a crystal glaive from the dead <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Earth Priest<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the room, the party headed for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyar-Besil &#8211; Manufactory Quarter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which they had every expectation would be the <em><strong>Temple of Eternal Flame<\/strong><\/em>. On their way, they had a sudden feeling like they were Being Observed from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everywhere,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the sensation passing after a few, brief moments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first room in the new zone they found a guard set against intruders from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temple of Black Earth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consisting of several <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half-ogre<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ogre<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s &#8212; who were little match for the party, bolstered by <\/span><b>Aldrik<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h1>Player Recap<\/h1>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #333399;\">We traded a can of sand for Aldrik<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333399;\">Xharva Dreem requests that Moony let her negotiate with Nala. Eventually, Nala decides to bargain. After much back and forth it turns out that Xharva wants Nala&#8217;s trinket, the can with what sounds like sands in it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333399;\">They go back to Marlos&#8217; room where the Aldrik statue stands. Xharva encircles the stone with her sandy form. When she withdraws, an unhappy Aldrik is standing in his loincloth. His manacles are strange stony substance, maybe coral. Once freed the group decides to quickly move out of Marlos&#8217; room. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333399;\">While taking a short rest, they get a very brief story from the Aldrik. Mostly that the water and earth temples aren&#8217;t working together and that he needed more beer before getting anything else out of him. They find some clothes and a glaive from a earth priests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333399;\">When the group decides to head towards the northwest door leading to the fire temple. Moony explores ahead down the hall and hears a group speaking in low guttural voices. The group decides to charge in. After a few tense moment against the large opponents, the group of 2 ogres and 4 half-ogres fall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Game Notes<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A very fun pay-off session, with all sorts of things wrapping up neatly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Unlike Anakin, Xharva loves sand<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We finally got the <\/span><b>Xharva Deem <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">story resolved, with the mysterious <em><strong>Sands of Broken Bonds<\/strong><\/em> earning the party a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wish<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spell from the Dao to de-petrify Aldrik.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yeah, with enough time I had neatly expanded the whole sands thing from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmbinder.com\/share\/-MUtwIO52sItq0CWEluC#:~:text=A%20metal%20can%20that%20has%20no%20opening%20but%20sounds%20as%20if%20it%20is%20filled%20with%20liquid%2C%20sand%2C%20spiders%2C%20or%20broken%20glass%20(your%20choice)\">rando trinket<\/a> (#47 &#8220;A metal can that has no opening but sounds as if it is filled with liquid, sand, spiders, or broken glass (your choice)&#8221;) to an artifact with its own journal write-up:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Sands of Broken Bonds<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/sand-of-broken-bonds.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4155\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/sand-of-broken-bonds-650x349.jpg\" alt=\"sand of broken bonds\" width=\"650\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/sand-of-broken-bonds-650x349.jpg 650w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/sand-of-broken-bonds-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/sand-of-broken-bonds-768x412.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/sand-of-broken-bonds.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">In the words of\u00a0<strong>Xharva Deem<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>The stuff that dreams are made of. In fleshling cultures, they speak of it as though alive, carrying them into the dream world, where all things are possible, all pleasures fulfilled. That is but a crude, meaty misinterpretation of the Dust, the Grit, the Sands of Broken Bonds, of which all creatures long for, even if they cannot use them, and even if their vision is blurred by the sands within their eyes.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">As Xharva described it, any creature of the Plane of Elemental Earth would find the sands a combination of a mind-expanding hallucinogenic, an aphrodisiac, a reward pathway stimulant, a Nepenthe of forgetting sorrows, and a rich, powerful, mind-blowing experience. She did not mention any limitations of time or dosage, or any down side or harmful effects of using the substance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">It turned out that one of the party&#8217;s\u00a0Trinkets, a can apparently filled with sand that\u00a0<b>Nala<\/b>&#8216;s old guard captain,\u00a0Brex Gelvain\u00a0had given\u00a0her as a good luck charm, actually contained some of these Sands. Xharva, detecting that, sought to buy them from Nala when they met in the\u00a0Temple of Black Earth, and could not believe that the Dragonborn warrior didn&#8217;t realize what she had, leading to multiple antagonistic encounters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Xharva considered the sands beyond price, however, and, in a final, peaceful engagement, even deigned to cast a\u00a0<i>Wish<\/i>\u00a0spell to reanimate the petrified\u00a0<b>Aldrik\u00a0<\/b>in exchange for the can<b>.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4156\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4156\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Gollum-and-the-One-Ring.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4156\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Gollum-and-the-One-Ring-150x150.webp\" alt=\"Gollum and the One Ring\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Gollum-and-the-One-Ring-150x150.webp 150w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Gollum-and-the-One-Ring-100x100.webp 100w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Gollum-and-the-One-Ring.webp 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 85vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4156\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Happy Xharva!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xharva, at least, had a &#8220;happy Gollum clutching the Ring as he falls into lava&#8221; look as she vanished from the campaign indefinitely. Normally Dao will only grant Wishes in exchange for personal service (slavery) of some value; in this case, a brief case full of uncut heroin did the trick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will she use the Sands herself? Or sell them to someone else for even more treasure? Let&#8217;s leave that as a mystery for another day, perhaps another campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Freeing Aldrik<\/h2>\n<p>Besides the Dao <em>Wish<\/em>,\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had figured <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other ways to free Aldrik by the time the episode came around &#8212; <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wait for Faith to level and get <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greater Restoration<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (imminent), or<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Play around with the Basilisk Fountain I&#8217;d introduced, or <\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3909\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3909\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/windvane-token.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-3909\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/windvane-token-150x150.png\" alt=\"Windvane\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/windvane-token-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/windvane-token-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/windvane-token.png 256w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 85vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3909\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Everything&#8217;s better when Windvane is involved!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(A new one) have Windvane pitch a fit about them abandoning a comrade in the Earth Temple (she has abandonment issues, not surprisingly, and is, from the Air perspective, utterly opposed to Earth) and wielding some sort of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wish-<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like magic from inside the Bag of Holding, which would burn her out for several episodes (and make her all the more fun when she came back).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3441\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3441\" style=\"width: 237px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Aldrik-A-HF-B-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3441\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Aldrik-A-HF-B-1-237x300.png\" alt=\"Aldrik\" width=\"237\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Aldrik-A-HF-B-1-237x300.png 237w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Aldrik-A-HF-B-1-514x650.png 514w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Aldrik-A-HF-B-1.png 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 237px) 85vw, 237px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aldrik<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But my wife figured out the &#8220;Oh, she offers to buy the can at any price? It&#8217;s a fun-looking weapon, it will provoke reactions from anyone in the cults they meet, it counts as a magic weapon for attack purposes (even though it has no particular bonus), and it gave me a chance to learn more about how Reach Weapons work in 5e.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>So what was going on with Aldrik?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3834\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3834\" style=\"width: 258px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Aldrik-B-HF-D-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3834\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Aldrik-B-HF-D-1-258x300.png\" alt=\"Aldrik\" width=\"258\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Aldrik-B-HF-D-1-258x300.png 258w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Aldrik-B-HF-D-1-558x650.png 558w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Aldrik-B-HF-D-1.png 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 258px) 85vw, 258px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3834\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aldrik, before he got snatched.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I had already decided that the dwarf was somehow linked by blood and spirit with the old king of Tyar-Besil, such that he had some control over aspects of the city (or could be used for such control). This tied in some strange way to his first appearance as an apparent escapee from the Stone Circle Monastery.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Aerisi had detected it back at Feathergale Spire, and kidnapped him via Air Elemental to serve her (and, when he refused, stuck him into amnesiac slavery).<\/li>\n<li>And then Gar Shatterkeel got wind of it and used a Water Elemental to nab him &#8212; and take him with him when he went to the ziggurat Temple of Elemental Evil in the Fane &#8230; convinced to either get him cooperating over control of the city, or using him as a sacrifice to the Elder Eye.<\/li>\n<li>Marlos, also getting info about this, led\u00a0<em>his<\/em> forces into the Fane, and managed to capture Aldrik for himself, then put him on ice (er, rock) while he figured out his next move.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3929\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3929\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Gar-Shatterkeel-and-the-Zigurat.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3929\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Gar-Shatterkeel-and-the-Zigurat-300x267.webp\" alt=\"Gar Shatterkeel and the Ziggurat\" width=\"300\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Gar-Shatterkeel-and-the-Zigurat-300x267.webp 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Gar-Shatterkeel-and-the-Zigurat-650x579.webp 650w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Gar-Shatterkeel-and-the-Zigurat-768x684.webp 768w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Gar-Shatterkeel-and-the-Zigurat.webp 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3929\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gar Shatterkeel and the Ziggurat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s 2-3 that Aldrik remembers, with a fair amount of trauma (threats from Gar being less awful than witnessing the horrors of the rituals seen, not to mention being literally petrified).\u00a0 Or so I guess: Aldrik&#8217;s player had been very intentional to be gruff and laconic, so a lot of the background I wrote up (or that he wrote up, for that matter) never got brought out at the table.<\/p>\n<p>Which is fine.<\/p>\n<p>None of this is in the campaign, of course. But working character stories into campaign is one of a DM&#8217;s main jobs. The bad guys never really had a chance, but, then, the guard posts aren&#8217;t supposed to be impenetrable, just wearing down and interesting. And if they back out of the Fire Temple, there are rules for how the room gets re-populated shortly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And back out they might, because that&#8217;s the third Temple down, and the Cult Retaliation rules say they will get &#8220;Race to Destruction,&#8221; a warning that the someone (Fire Temple, most likely) is going to send more mad bombers against \u2026 their dear friends in Red Larch.\u00a0 (They will find out they already missed out on the devastation of Westbridge, a town they&#8217;ve never been in.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presumably this will get them out of the dungeons for a bit.
