While there are any number of standard hero names (“Captain Megaton”) and quite a number of dubious ones (“Rectal Damage”), not to mention funny ones (see Hostess Heroes), occasionally one comes along that’s a lot more subtle.
\nSo the other night, we ran across “Proverbs 31 Woman,” which had folks scratching their heads.
\nProverbs 31<\/a>:
\n 9 Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character
\n10 [c] A wife of noble character who can find?
\nShe is worth far more than rubies.
\n11 Her husband has full confidence in her
\nand lacks nothing of value.
\n12 She brings him good, not harm,
\nall the days of her life.
\n13 She selects wool and flax
\nand works with eager hands.
\n14 She is like the merchant ships,
\nbringing her food from afar.
\n15 She gets up while it is still dark;
\nshe provides food for her family
\nand portions for her servant girls.
\n16 She considers a field and buys it;
\nout of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
\n17 She sets about her work vigorously;
\nher arms are strong for her tasks.
\n18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
\nand her lamp does not go out at night.
\n19 In her hand she holds the distaff
\nand grasps the spindle with her fingers.
\n20 She opens her arms to the poor
\nand extends her hands to the needy.
\n21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
\nfor all of them are clothed in scarlet.
\n22 She makes coverings for her bed;
\nshe is clothed in fine linen and purple.
\n23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
\nwhere he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
\n24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
\nand supplies the merchants with sashes.
\n25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
\nshe can laugh at the days to come.
\n26 She speaks with wisdom,
\nand faithful instruction is on her tongue.
\n27 She watches over the affairs of her household
\nand does not eat the bread of idleness.
\n28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
\nher husband also, and he praises her:
\n29 “Many women do noble things,
\nbut you surpass them all.”
\n30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
\nbut a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
\n31 Give her the reward she has earned,
\nand let her works bring her praise at the city gate.<\/em>
\nAnd there you have it. Don’t recall if she was clothed in scarlet, but there are some fun things in there for a hero. Not sure how you’d nickname her. “P31”?
