Sweet and minty with a hefty bourbon punch, this iconic drink is a crowd pleaser.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 liter\u00a0bourbon<\/li>\n<li>40 mint leaves<\/li>\n<li>1 c distilled water (if you are a purist)<\/li>\n<li>1 c granulated sugar<\/li>\n<li>Mint sprigs for garnish<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Directions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Prepare the mint extract.<br \/>\na.Remove about 40 mint leaves \u2013 wash and place in a small bowl.<br \/>\nb.Cover with bourbon\u00a0(about 3 oz).<br \/>\nc. Soak the leaves for at least 15 minutes.<br \/>\nd. Gather the leaves in a clean, soap-free piece of cotton cloth and vigorously wring the mint bundle over the bowl of bourbon.<br \/>\ne. Dip the bundle again and repeat the process several times.<br \/>\nf. Set extract aside.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare the simple syrup.<br \/>\na. Mix 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of water in a cooking pot.<br \/>\nb. Heat to dissolve the sugar.<br \/>\nc. Stir constantly so the sugar does not burn.<br \/>\nd. \u00a0Let cool.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare the julep mixture.<br \/>\na. Add 1 cup of the simple syrup to 3 \u00bd cups of\u00a0bourbon<br \/>\nb. Add the mint extract small amounts at a time to the julep mixture, and taste as you add. Repeat until right. You are looking for a soft mint aroma and taste \u2013 generally about 3 tablespoons of mint extract, but this varies for each batch.<br \/>\nc. Refrigerate it for at least 24 hours to \u201cmarry\u201d the flavors.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">4. Serve the juleps. \u00a0If you don\u2019t have julep cups, use any cocktail glass that allows your nose to sniff and smell the \u201cbloom\u201d of mint.<br \/>\na. Pack each glass to the top with crushed ice. Allow the outside of the glass to frost.<br \/>\nb. Pour the refrigerated julep mixture over the ice and garnish with mint sprig.<br \/>\nc.
