{"id":4281,"date":"2018-02-19T17:54:10","date_gmt":"2018-02-20T00:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/margie\/?p=4281"},"modified":"2018-02-19T17:54:10","modified_gmt":"2018-02-20T00:54:10","slug":"jumbo-jims-tower-of-fruit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/margie\/jumbo-jims-tower-of-fruit.html","title":{"rendered":"Jumbo Jim&#8217;s Tower of Fruit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Jumbo Jim&#8217;s Tower of Fruit is a tradition at our summer parties.\u00a0 It is pretty free form and flexible &#8211; how big is the group, how much table space, what fruit is in season.\u00a0 We sometimes have dishes of sweet dips for the fruit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>kiwi<\/li>\n<li>cantaloupe<\/li>\n<li>honeydew<\/li>\n<li>watermelon<\/li>\n<li>oranges, lemons limes<\/li>\n<li>pineapple<\/li>\n<li>bunches grapes &#8211; red and green<\/li>\n<li>strawberries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tower:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>lettuce, kale, Swiss chard (large leaves of something)<\/li>\n<li>parsley<\/li>\n<li>green Styrofoam pieces &#8211; cubes and\/or rounds to use like building blocks<\/li>\n<li>long skewers<\/li>\n<li>toothpicks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Directions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Arrange Styrofoam (of various sizes)\u00a0 to form the structure for the tower.\u00a0 Stair step them up to a single round top piece.<\/li>\n<li>Skewer them securely together with long skewers.<\/li>\n<li>Cover them with lettuce, kale or other large leafed greens secured with toothpicks.<\/li>\n<li>Cut the whole pineapple in half lengthwise.\u00a0 Leave the top on.<\/li>\n<li>Extract the fruit, leaving a shell to use as a dish.<\/li>\n<li>Cut the cantaloupe in half.\u00a0 You can use a v shaped tool to make the edge fancy.<\/li>\n<li>Extract the fruit, leaving a shell to use as a dish.<\/li>\n<li>Cut the honeydew in 1\/3 &#8211; 2\/3 to make a deep shell.\u00a0 You can also use a little watermelon.<\/li>\n<li>Cut a thin slice off the bottom so it will sit flat.<\/li>\n<li>Extract the fruit, leaving a shell to use as a dish.<\/li>\n<li>Cut all the fruit you extracted into large bite size pieces- keep them separate.<\/li>\n<li>Now comes the fun.\u00a0 Place the honeydew at the top of your&#8221;tower&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Arrange the cantaloupe on the next layer.<\/li>\n<li>Use the half pineapples on the lowest corners.<\/li>\n<li>Skewer all these in place.\u00a0 They will be the bowls for your fruit.\u00a0 You can add other containers &#8211; large sea shells, pretty baskets, etc.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Decorate&#8221; the tower with parsley (fill in blank spots) half oranges, lemons, limes (cut side out) and even flowers (real or not).<\/li>\n<li>At party time, fill the containers with a variety of fruits &#8211; not necessarily what the container originally had.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t forget toothpicks for serving and a dish for used toothpicks.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Serves:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Usually more that you think it will.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Jim Kleerup<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jumbo Jim&#8217;s Tower of Fruit is a tradition at our summer parties.\u00a0 It is pretty free form and flexible &#8211; how big is the group, how much table space, what fruit is in season.\u00a0 We sometimes have dishes of sweet dips for the fruit.
